Kealakehe Elementary plans reading program
The community is invited to Kealakehe Elementary School for its ABC Read to Me Family Literacy Read Aloud Program from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday in the cafeteria. ABC Read to Me is an evening of fun and learning for everyone in the school community. Highlights of the program include motivating children to love reading; relaxing and enjoy listening to stories; hear the latest information and research about reading; collect book lists, articles and easy tips for the family; free snacks, drinks and dinner with family and friends, and prizes. Principal Nancy Matsukawa will read “Our Tree Named Steve” by Alan Zweibel.
ABC Read to Me volunteers read to children from toddlers to fifth grade. Kealakehe Elementary teachers Eric Lammerman and Cathy Riehle will read aloud to the adult group. Older children are welcome to join the adult presentation.

Rotary scholarship applications due soon
The Rotary Club of Kona is offering up to eight scholarships to students enrolled at University of Hawaii Center at West Hawaii who have earned at least 24 credits and are working toward an associate degree or associate of applied science degree. The scholarships are for $1,000 spread over two semesters.
Application forms are available through the school counselor and on the club website at rotaryclubofkona.com in the downloads column. Applications are due March 30.
Applications are being accepted for Monsanto Hawaii’s scholarships
As many as 10 $1,000 Monsanto Hawaii Life Sciences Scholarships will be awarded in 2014. This scholarship is open to graduating seniors of all high schools in Hawaii who will be attending an accredited college or university to pursue a discipline related to the life sciences — including agriculture, agronomy, biology, botany, genetics, horticulture, plant physiology, chemistry, crop science and soil science. The application deadline is April 1.
The Hawaii Agricultural Scholarship is offered to applicants who have been accepted, or are currently enrolled, as full-time students at an accredited college or university other than the University of Hawaii at Manoa or Oregon State University; and pursuing a degree in an agricultural science program or related discipline — including botany, genetics, horticulture, plant physiology, crop science or soil science. The application deadline is May 1.

Kenoi attending Waimea school dinner
Hawaii County Mayor Billy Kenoi. has agreed to share some of his “small kid time” stories about trials and triumphs and about those who helped or hindered him along the way at a gathering for Waimea Middle School students and families at 6 p.m. March 12 in the school cafeteria.
There is no charge for the dinner and talk-story, but an reservations is suggested for school families.
The program is being presented by the school’s new “Connecting For Success” grant in partnership with Hawaii Community Foundation to support the school’s mission of empowering all students with the skills, values and cultural understanding to successfully navigate high school and beyond for college and career readiness.
Dinner will include kalua pig and cabbage, hapa rice, a Waimea greens salad, dessert and – for adults – coffee.

Tourism association awards scholarships
The Hawaii Lodging & Tourism Association has awarded two college scholarships established in tribute to two noted Hawaii tourism leaders.
A Clem Judd Jr. Memorial Scholarship in the amount of $1,500 has been awarded to Jo-Lynn Kahala-Minczer, of Waikoloa, who is a senior at the University of Hawaii at Manoa School of Travel Industry Management.
The R.W. “Bob” Holden Scholarship in the amount of $1,000 has been awarded to Chelsey-Mei Borge from Kahului, Maui, who is a junior at the University of Hawaii at Manoa School of Travel Industry Management.
“We are thrilled to extend our scholarships to Jo-Lynn and Chelsey-Mei, and commend them for their interest in pursuing careers in the hospitality field,” said George Szigeti, association president and CEO. “These scholarships help ensure that Hawaii’s lodging industry is supporting the talent to fuel its growth through development of future leaders.”
The scholarships were awarded based on academic performance, hospitality work experience, financial need, and other specific requirements as noted in the scholarship criteria.
Applications are being accepted from now until July 1 for the 2014-15 school year. College students meeting the certain criteria can download the application forms online at hawaiilodging.org and mail them to the Hawaii Lodging & Tourism Association.
