Free youth admission to Vulcans games

The University of Hawaii at Hilo athletic department is offering free admission to youth organizations for home baseball and softball games.

Children 12 and younger wearing team or organization uniforms may enter home games for free. Organizations include youth sports teams, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts.

Tickets are available at the Vulcans ticket office and the ticket table at home games.

UH-Hilo soccer camps

Three soccer camps are scheduled this month at UH-Hilo.

Spring break camp, March 17 to 21: 9 a.m. to noon, 7- to 10-year-olds, $60; 1 to 4 p.m., 11- to 14-year-olds, $60; 4:30 to 5:30 p.m., 4- to 6-year-olds, $20

Women’s camp, March 23: 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., UH-Hilo soccer field, ages 15 and older, $50

Men’s camp, March 22: 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., UH-Hilo soccer field, ages 15 years and older, $50

High school rodeo at Paniolo Park

The Hawaii High School Rodeo at Paniolo Park in Waimea continues the first weekend of April and May. Saturday activities feature keiki and junior divisions; Sunday activities feature high school participants. The state finals junior division is May 9 to 11 and high school division is June 12 to 15.

The competition is free; donations are welcome. Food will be sold, with proceeds to benefit the program.

Kai Opua Canoe Club season begins

The Kai Opua Canoe Club is starting its season.

Girls (12-18): 4 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays

Boys (12-18): 4 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, starting today

Novice “Y,” co-ed, and under-12: 3:45 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, starting March 25

Women: Novice A and B (new paddlers), 4:30 p.m. Mondays; open and age divisions, 5:30 p.m. Mondays, starting March 31; team meeting, 5:30 p.m., March 28, at the Kai Opua Canoe Halau

Men: Novice B (new paddlers), 4:30 p.m., Tuesdays, starting March 25; Novice A, open and age divisions, 5:15 p.m. Tuesdays, starting April 1

Practices are at Kamakahonu Beach near King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel. New paddlers must have copies of identifications; paddlers younger than 18 need their parent or guardian’s signature.

Keauhou Canoe Club festival race

The Keauhou Canoe Club is hosting the Kauikeaouli Festival Race on Saturday. The 3-mile race for recreational OC6 paddlers is at 8 a.m., with registration at 7 a.m. at the club’s halau.

There will be other races.

Starting and finishing at Keauhou Bay: OC-1/OC-2/rudderless canoes and surfskis, 6-mile short course; standup and paddleboard, 3-mile short course

Starting at Honokohau Harbor and finishing at Keauhou Bay: 10-mile long course

Both short and long courses start at 9:30 a.m., with registration at 8 a.m in both locations (Keauhou and Honokohau).

The Keauhou Canoe Club is starting its season.

Orientation for youth paddlers is 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday. Lunch will be provided.

Canoe race at Kawaihae Surf Park

The Kohala Coast/Beanie Heen Memorial races will be at 9 a.m. March 29 at Kawaihae Surf Park. The races, for OC-1, OC-2 and SUP on short and long courses, start and end at the park. There will be a party and raffle after the races.

Kona Stampede Rodeo

The Kona Roping Club will participate in the 50th annual Kona Stampede Rodeo on Saturday and Sunday at Honaunau Rodeo Arena.

The action, including events such as poo wai u and double mugging, begins at 8 a.m.; the rodeo starts at noon.

Admission is $7; free for children younger than 11. There will be food concessions.

Gold Coast Little League softball

The Hawaii State Junior Golf Association is offering free introductory clinics for junior golfers on March 22 at Makalei Golf Club.

Kamehameha Schools golf benefit

West Hawaii Ohana, the nonprofit parent association of Kamehameha Schools, will hold its 15th annual Golf Outing on March 29 at Big Island Country Club. Check-in is at 7:30 a.m.; shotgun start at 8:30.

The event is open to everyone. The entry fee is $100 per player. Proceeds benefit the scholarship fund for the Kapalama Campus West Hawaii boarders. Lunch and an awards presentation follow the two-person scramble format play.

Basketball junior high league

The Hawaii County Department of Parks and Recreation will hold an instructional basketball league for students in grades six to eight.

Kona horseshoe club spring league

The Kona Horseshoe Pitchers Club Spring League will start Thursday.

Membership is required for NHPA-sanctioned doubles play. Singles will be matched up when possible.

The eight-week league costs $5 per week and is played from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursdays at the Palm Court horseshoe pits at Old Kona Airport Park.

Hawaii Cycling Club Century Ride

The Hawaii Cycling Club will host the Century Ride on April 5 to benefit North Hawaii Hospice.

The ride starts and ends at Spencer Beach Park. Distances are 31 miles (starting at 8 a.m.), 62 miles (7:30) and 112 miles (6:30).

Entry fees are $50 through March 23 and $60 thereafter. Participants will receive a T-shirt, food at several rest stops on the course and a barbecue after the rides.

Cycling club offers Lavaman training

The Hawaii Cycling Club will host free training time trials at 8 a.m. Saturday for participants training for Lavaman Waikoloa.

Registration is 7 to 7:40 a.m. at Bike Works Beach & Sport in the Queens’ Shops.

The Kua Bay time trial starts on Queen Kaahumanu Highway, just south of Waikoloa Beach Road. The course is 12.2 miles.

Big Island Running offers training

Big Island Running Company will offer free training groups for the Kona Marathon, Half-Marathon, 10K and 5K races.

An introductory meeting will be at 5 p.m. March 27, at the Big Island Running Company store on Alii Drive, with a run afterward. No running experience is necessary.

Running schedules will be tailored to an individual’s fitness and goals, and runs will be scheduled to coincide with group runs at 5 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays and long runs at 6:30 a.m. Saturdays.

The Kona Marathon is June 22.
