Summer school program planned
Kealakehe Elementary School’s 21st Century Community Learning Center will hold its summer school program from 8 a.m. to noon June 4 through July 2. The fee for kindergartners through fifth-graders is $159. Enrollment will be open to all students outside the school as of April 19. Applications may be picked up at the school’s main office. Registration forms must be completed by May 9 and full payment is required by May 16 to hold a child’s place.

Kona Pacific PCS accepting applications
Kona Pacific Public Charter School is accepting applications for kindergarten through eighth grade for school year 2014-15. Applications will be accepted through March 31 with a lottery selection held April 7. Applications received between April 1 and Oct. 15 will be included in rolling admissions.
Those interested may tour the school and classrooms during open houses at 7:55 a.m Tuesday and March 25, April 1, 8, 15, 22 and 29. Attendees will learn about the school’s Waldorf-inspired program that is rooted in the land and culture of Hawaii.
Kona Pacific is a tuition-free public school. The Kona Pacific campus is located above Kona Community Hospital in Kealakekua.

Matsunobu is National Merit finalist
Parker School senior Lysha Matsunobu has advanced as a National Merit Scholarship Program finalist. She is one of 15,000 finalists out of the 50,000 highest scorers of the approximately 1.5 million high school students who took the Preliminary Scholastic Assessment Test last year.
Matsunobu, the daughter of Miriam and Neal Matsunobu of Kona, also has been in the news recently for her science accomplishments — she attended the Summer Science Program at Westmont College last summer and was the only student presenter at November’s Galaxy Forum in Waimea.
Lugo earns spot on dean’s list
Alex Lugo of Captain Cook has been named to the dean’s list at Pacific University in Forest Grove, Ore., for fall semester 2013. Lugo is among 332 of Pacific’s 1,783 undergraduate students to achieve this high academic honor.
Kamehameha taking scholars applications
Students entering grades 9 through 12 in fall 2014 who are not enrolled full time at one of Kamehameha Schools’ three campuses, and who live on Oahu, Kauai, Maui or Hawaii are now eligible to apply for Kamehameha Scholars.
Kamehameha Scholars is a year-round supplementary educational enrichment program with a focus on college and career guidance. The program helps Native Hawaiian students achieve a higher education degree, enter the career of their choosing and cultivate their ability to be servant leaders.
Students who complete the program will earn a college scholarship.
Applications must be postmarked by March 31 and are available at ksbe.edu/admissions. Families may also call 842-8800 or toll free at 800-842-4682 ext. 8800 to have an application mailed to them. Kamehameha Schools’ policy on admissions is to give preference to children of Hawaiian ancestry to the extent permitted by law.
