‘Werther’ screened Saturday afternoon
Regal Cinemas and the Hoku Concert Series present the Met HD production of “Werther” by Jules Massenet at 12:55 p.m. Saturday at Makalapua Cinemas. It is based on Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s revolutionary and tragic romance. An encore performance is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Wood, stone carvers featured in show
A group of Big Island wood and stone carvers is having a one-month art show beginning Saturday at Akiko’s Buddhist Bed and Breakfast in Wailea, which is located at 29-2091 Old Mamalahoa Highway, Hakalau. The works of art will be displayed in the garden grounds as well as the Montonaga Garage Gallery. The show, “Men of Wood and Stone,” celebrates these natural materials from the Big Island. The show is casual.
Four of the featured artists do substantial statues. The carvers include Fred Sariano, William McKnight, John Brault, Randy Takaki and Mike Rossetto. Sariano and McKnight will display stone, while Brault, Takaki and Rossetto will have wood sculptures to show.
Sariano’s stone art can be seen along the Hilo Bayfront with McKnight’s work. Brault and McKnight are presently finishing life-sized historic stone statues in their respective studios. McKnight is carving a life-sized St. Damien in lava stone while Brauldt is polishing a life-sized Green Mountain Boy made of Vermont Green Marble. Brault is also releasing a life-sized Archangel Michael statue made of Big Island ohia at this showing.
Wood art from the Big Island will be also be presented by Takaki and Rossetto. Takaki will display his wooden statues called “Guardians” while Rossetto will show his natural wood sculptures made from mango, lychee and bamboo.
The opening ceremony is from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday. Kumu Kimo Awai will preside over the opening ceremony where refreshments will be served and the artists will be present to greet the public.
On March 22, Brault and Sariano will be teaching a class on carving stone poi pounders. The class will be conducted from 1 to 4 p.m., and feature demonstrations of new stone carving tools.
