A high wind warning goes into effect this afternoon for much of Hawaii Island.
Northeasterly winds will increase quickly across the state on Saturday in the wake of a weak front moving through the islands. The winds are expected to accelerate down the leeward slopes of the islands.
National Weather Service forecasters in Honolulu are calling for northeast winds around 35 mph to 45 mph with localized gusts topping 65 mph for areas of West, North and East Hawaii. The warning is effective from 4 p.m. Saturday through 6 p.m. Sunday.
The strongest winds are expected in the leeward Kohala area, including the Waimea to Kawaihae corridor, western Saddle areas, and North Kona, according to forecasters. The service noted the following areas in the warning: Kailua-Kona, Milolii, Hilo, Volcano, Honokaa, Waimea and Waikoloa.
The winds are expected to peak Saturday night into Sunday morning, according to forecasters.
Winds this strong can result in damage to roofs, broken and falling branches, downed trees, downed utility poles and power lines resulting in power interruptions, according to forecasters. Residents are advised to properly secure outdoor items and trim older and weaker tree branches.
A high wind warning means that winds are expected to be at least 40 mph with gusts topping 60 mph.
