Echo City member rolls into Gail show

Kai Opua Canoe Club season underway

The Kai Opua Canoe Club has started its regatta practice season for:

  • Girls (12-18): 4 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays

  • Novice “Y,” co-ed, and under-12: 3:45 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, starting March 25
  • Women Novice A and B (new paddlers): 4:30 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays
  • Women’s team meeting: 5:30 p.m. March 28, at the club halau
  • Women’s open and age divisions: 5:30 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays, starting March 31

Practices are at Kamakahonu Beach near King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel. All paddlers must know how to swim. New paddlers must have identifications; paddlers younger than 18 need their parent or guardian’s signature.

Free youth admission to Vulcans games

The University of Hawaii at Hilo athletic department is offering free admission to youth organizations for home baseball and softball games.

Children 12 and younger wearing team or organization uniforms may enter home games for free. Organizations include youth sports teams, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts.

Tickets are available at the Vulcans ticket office and the ticket table at home games.

Soccer camps are scheduled this month at UH-Hilo.

High school rodeo at Paniolo Park

The Hawaii High School Rodeo at Paniolo Park in Waimea continues the first weekend of April and May. Saturday activities feature keiki and junior divisions; Sunday activities feature high school participants. The state finals junior division is May 9 to 11 and high school division is June 12 to 15.

The competition is free; donations are welcome. Food will be sold, with proceeds to benefit the program.

Canoe race at Kawaihae Surf Park

The Kohala Coast/Beanie Heen Memorial races will be at 9 a.m. March 29 at Kawaihae Surf Park. The races, for OC-1, OC-2 and SUP on short and long courses, start and end at the park. There will be a party and raffle after the races.

Gold Coast Little League softball

Kamehameha Schools golf benefit

West Hawaii Ohana, the nonprofit parent association of Kamehameha Schools, will hold its 15th annual Golf Outing on March 29 at Big Island Country Club. Check-in is at 7:30 a.m.; shotgun start at 8:30.

The event is open to everyone. The entry fee is $100 per player. Proceeds benefit the scholarship fund for the Kapalama Campus West Hawaii boarders. Lunch and an awards presentation follow the two-person scramble format play.

Basketball junior high league

The Hawaii County Department of Parks and Recreation will hold an instructional basketball league for students in grades six to eight.

The season starts in April. Games will be played Thursdays and Saturdays.

Hawaii Cycling Club Century Ride

The Hawaii Cycling Club will host the Century Ride on April 5 to benefit North Hawaii Hospice.

The ride starts and ends at Spencer Beach Park. Distances are 31 miles (starting at 8 a.m.), 62 miles (7:30) and 112 miles (6:30).

Entry fees are $50 through March 23 and $60 thereafter. Participants will receive a T-shirt, food at rest stops on the course and a barbecue after the rides.

Big Island Running Co. offers training

Big Island Running Co. will offer free training groups for the Kona Marathon, Half-Marathon, 10K and 5K races.

An introductory meeting will be at 5 p.m. March 27, at the Big Island Running Company store on Alii Drive, with a run afterward. No running experience is necessary.

Running schedules will be tailored to an individual’s fitness and goals, and runs will be scheduled to coincide with group runs at 5 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays and long runs at 6:30 a.m. Saturdays.

The Kona Marathon is June 22.
