Waimea College Fair slated for April 7
Hawaii Preparatory Academy will host the annual Waimea College Fair sponsored by the Hawaii Association for College Admission Counseling from 6:30 to 8 p.m. April 7 in the school’s Castle Gym. The event is free and is designed for all Waimea area students interested in pursuing higher education opportunities.
This year’s program will feature colleges from Hawaii, the mainland and Canada. A general advising and financial aid center will be available to students and their families to answer specific questions regarding the college admission process and financial aid.

FOLK offering scholarship
Friends of the Libraries, Kona is offering a $2,000 scholarship toward a master’s degree in library and information science offered by the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Candidates must be Hawaii residents and must apply by April 30. Preference will be given to Hawaii Island residents.

CTE scholarship available at Kealakehe
Career and Technical Education seniors attending Kealakehe High School who live in the Waikoloa region may qualify for the Joseph E. Spadaro Memorial Scholarship. The students must register in the Hawaii Community College’s Transportation and Applied Technology Department for either a certificate of achievement or an associate in applied science degree. The scholarship will cover tuition, fees, required books and supplies.
Interested CTE seniors should contact Jeanne Hartney, college counselor at the school for a full explanation and an application form. Completed applications are due to Hartney by April 14.
Volunteers sought to interview seniors
Kealakehe High School is asking for community members to help with panel interviews for its 2014 graduating seniors.
In order to receive a diploma and participate in the graduation ceremony, all graduating Kealakehe High seniors are required to make a presentation as part of their required personal transition plan. Approximately 300 seniors will be interviewed. Student interviews will be held April 2, 3, 7, 9 and 23. The time commitment is one to two hours on a three- to four-member panel consisting of a community, faculty and staff member, interviewing up to three students.
Additionally, 18 seniors are doing a senior project to attain valedictorian status and will be interviewed on April 24. The panel makeup is the same as above but the interviews will be 45 minutes for each student.

School preparation program slated at Kahakai Elementary
Kahakai Elementary School’s “Soda Box Library” is a free early intervention program developed to prepare future students and their parents for school. It will serve children entering Kahakai Elementary School in the school year 2014-15. The program meets in the school library from 5 to 6 p.m. every Tuesday for four weeks, beginning April 1.
Children accompanied by parents, will participate in reading and writing games, listen to stories, borrow books from the “Soda Box Library” and learn to use the playground equipment to develop social skills. Parents will learn how to work with their children on reading, writing and math readiness activities.

Kahakai council meeting Tuesday
Kahakai Elementary School is holding its monthly School Community Council meeting at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the principal’s office. On the agenda will be a review and approval of the academic and financial plan.
Science teachers invited to workshop
Kamehameha Schools Hawaii’s science department is bringing in two nationally recognized professors from the University of Wisconsin at Stevens Point to conduct a chemical demonstration workshop. All Hawaii Island science teachers are invited to participate and learn more about how they can create fun with science.
The demonstrators, Marv Lang and Donald Showalter, have both been awarded the American Chemical Society Helen M. Free award for public education. They have been featured on television programs such as “Newton’s Apple” and the “World of Chemistry.”
The workshop will take place from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. March 29 in Keawe Dining Hall on the Kamehameha Schools Hawaii campus in Keaau. All attendees will receive a handbook of demonstrations that are good for all ages.

Rotary club offers scholarships
The Rotary Club of Kona Mauka is accepting applications from graduating seniors of West Hawaii high schools for several scholarships. Completed scholarship applications, including a high school transcript and two letters of recommendation, must be returned by April 20.
Recycled art competition planned
Recycle Hawaii announces its ninth annual Art of Recycling School Competition to be held in April. The program aims to increase environmental awareness and encourage recycling and sustainable practices in the community. The competition is open to Hawaii Island kindergarten through 12th-grade students who create original artwork from recycled or reusable materials for jury and exhibit.
Teachers must register by Tuesday. An entry and waiver form must accompany each selected art piece to the appropriate district site. Entries are judged on originality, theme, personal expression, execution of materials and artistic merit. Outstanding entries in Elementary, Middle, and high school levels receive prize certificates. Outstanding class and schools receive cash prizes.
