To increase the visibility of pedestrians and bicyclists on Alii Drive in Kona, the Hawaii County Department of Public Works is widening shoulder markings on both sides of the thoroughfare. Work began Thursday morning.

The striping will be increased from four inches to eight inches, according to the department.

Work started at the entrance to Keauhou Shopping Center and will progress north to just south of Kahaluu Beach Park on Thursday, according to the department, which noted crews are working in four- to five-block sections at a time to reduce the project’s impact on users. Once the crews reach the beach park, they will move to the makai side of Alii Drive and head back to the shopping center.

Work will then progress from Kahaluu north all the way to Palani Road, according to the department.

Crews will be working from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. The project is scheduled for completion on March 28, but may need to be extended.
