AARP driving class scheduled for Monday
Kona Palisades Association is sponsoring an AARP Smart Driver Class at 1 p.m. Monday at the Palisades Recreation Center on lower Kaiminani Drive. The class is an updated version of the safe driver class. It does not include driving or written tests. It covers all of the subjects that may affect drivers as they age.
Automobile insurance companies may offer a discount for completion of the class.

‘Rites of Passage’ program planned
A “Rites of Passage: Raising Boys into Men” presentation is scheduled from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at gallery MELD in the Kona Old Industrial Area.
Parents, educators, health and human services workers and anyone who is inspired to create a better world for boys and girls are welcome to attend.
Cost is $5 for adults, free for children and young adults.

Habitat For Humanity to offer yurt dwellings
Former yurt dwellers Jen and Pat McGeehan have partnered with Habitat for Humanity and Melissa Fletcher, owner of Yurts of Hawaii in Volcano, to provide yurts to deserving families.
The first Habitat for Humanity yurt will be a 30-foot diameter, 706-square-foot structure with a wrap-around lanai, a full bathroom, kitchen, bedroom, potential fireplace, loft and water catchment system on 1 acre in Ocean View. The Habitat partner will receive a yurt that is designed to last a lifetime, completed at approximately 25 to 40 percent below the typical cost of a yurt.
The project came about after the McGeehans moved from their 3,000 square foot home in Big Bear, Calif., and rented an off-grid yurt in Pauuilo for 14 months while working to pay off more than $600,000 in debt incurred during the recent financial and real estate crash. Jen McGeehan will donate toward the project 15 percent of the net proceeds from the sale of her book, “My Year in a Yurt: God’s Blessings While Living In 450 Not-So-Square Feet!”
