A flood advisory is in effect for Hawaii Island until 9:30 p.m. Friday, according to the National Weather Service.

At 6:40 p.m., radar showed persistent, sometimes heavy, rain falling over the Kohala Mountains and the slopes above Hawi, Waipio Valley, Honokaa and Paauilo, according to forecasters. These areas of heavy rain were nearly stationary.

The public is advised to stay away from streams, drainage ditches and low-lying areas. Rainfall and runoff will cause hazardous driving conditions because of reduced visibility, ponding and poor braking action.
