Eisenzimmer completes Army basic training
Army Pvt. Jayson A. Eisenzimmer has graduated from basic infantry training at Fort Benning, Columbus, Ga.
During the nine weeks of training, the soldier received training in drill and ceremonies, weapons, map reading, tactics, military courtesy, military justice, physical fitness, first aid, and Army history, core values and traditions. Additional training included development of basic combat skills and battlefield operations and tactics, and experiencing use of various weapons and weapons defenses available to the infantry crewman.
Eisenzimmer is the son of Alma Eisenzimmer and brother of Megan Eisenzimmer, both of San Diego, Calif. He is also the son of Jay Eisenzimmer of Hilo.
He is a 2011 graduate of James Campbell High School in Ewa Beach, Oahu.
Silent honor guard will be held Thursday for fallen soldier
Interment services for Army 1st Lt. Robert N. Bennedsen will be held at noon Thursday at West Hawaii Veterans Cemetery.
Bennedsen died July 18, 2010, in Afghanistan while transporting vital supplies to remote outposts. He was awarded a Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart among other honors. He will be the second killed-in-action member of the military interred at the cemetery in its 16-year history.
A silent honor guard will be held for those interested in demonstrating appreciation for Bennedsen’s ultimate sacrifice. To participate, stand silently with hand over heart or in salute along the cemetery access road as the police-escorted family vehicle passes by. Flags are appropriate.
Those who wish to pay respect may also stand along Kaiminani Drive and Queen Kaahumanu Highway.
The public is also invited to attend the service, as well as the potluck luncheon at 1 p.m. at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post on Makala Boulevard in Kailua-Kona.

Hawaii Carriage Driving Society meeting Saturday
The Hawaii Carriage Driving Society will have its first general membership meeting from noon to 1 p.m. Saturday at the Paniolo Inn restaurant in Waimea.
The group is dedicated to promoting, developing and preserving the legacy of carriage driving through training, competition, safety and camaraderie of its membership,
Anyone who would like to learn about the society and has an interest in carriage driving is welcome.
Get Cultured class demonstrates food fermentation
Two fermented vegetable workshops will demonstrate how to make kimchi and sauerkraut and discuss the benefits of fermented foods.
The class will be hosted by visiting fermentation expert Ryan Peters from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. Saturday at the University of Hawaii College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources office in Kainaliu, which is located across from the Aloha Theatre. A Waimea class will be held from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. April 26 at Kanu o ka Aina Learning Ohana.
This workshop will focus on the culinary side of making vegetable ferments such as crunchy sauerkraut, crispy pickled beets, and pungent kimchi. Participants will also learn about the scientific health benefits and cultural history of fermented foods from around the world.
Call 934-2700 to register. Registration is on a first come, first served basis and costs $49. Participants are to bring 2 to 4 pounds of cabbage (head or Chinese), two 2-quart jars, a cutting board, mixing bowl and knife. All spices, seasonings and other vegetables will be provided.
