Whale count held Saturday
Hawaii Volcanoes National Park encourages volunteers to register to help count humpback whales during the final 2014 Sanctuary Ocean Count held from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday.
Kaena Point, near the end of Chain of Craters Road in the park, is one of 21 Sanctuary Ocean Count sites. It is the first pullout along the ocean, close to the end of the road – about a 45-minute drive from the park entrance. Binoculars are optional. Check in with Sanctuary Ocean Count site leader, park ranger Adrian Boone.

Daifukuji Temple tour scheduled Sunday
There will be a free, one-hour tour of Daifukuji Buddhist Temple at 2 p.m. Sunday.
The history and meaning of the objects in and around the temple will be explained, as well as the architectural features of the building. Daifukuji is in Honalo next to Teshima’s Restaurant. It was established in 1914 and is celebrating its centennial this year.
This is an opportunity to ask questions and learn about the unique things the temple contains. The symbolism of the objects and their design is often a reminder of a spiritual lesson. Those lessons will be explained in the tour. After the tour the gift shop will be open.

Nakamoto recognized as officer of month
The Kona Crime Prevention Committee will honor officer Sheldon Nakamoto as “Officer of the Month” at noon Wednesday.
He is being recognized for his outstanding performance. The guest speaker will be Bo Kahui, Lai Opua 2020 executive director and longtime supporter of interactive youth programs.
The public is invited to attend the luncheons normally held on the first Wednesday of each month. The cost is $20, all inclusive at Huggo’s Restaurant. Reservations are required and may be made by contacting Liz Holey at lholey@hawaii.rr.com or 443-7708 by Monday.
Overeaters group meets Saturday
An Overeaters Anonymous meeting will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at Unity Church sanctuary, 75-5722 Hanama Place.
The 12-step program views compulsive overeating as a physical, emotional and spiritual disease that can be arrested but not cured.
The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop eating compulsively. The nonprofit organization is supported by the voluntary contributions of attending members.
Co-Dependents Anonymous to meet
The Co-Dependents Anonymous women’s meeting is scheduled from 5 to 6 p.m. Monday at Unity Church sanctuary, 75-5722 Hanama Place in Kailua-Kona.
Co-Dependents Anon- ymous is a 12-step fellowship of men and women whose common purpose is recovery from codependence and the development and maintenance of healthy relationships. The nonprofit is supported by voluntary contributions of attending members.
