A winter weather advisory remains in effect for Big Island summits through 6 p.m. Tuesday.
Forecasters said two inches of snow to fall on Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea above 12,500 feet in elevation. The service cautioned of snow accumulations and freezing fog.
The service forecast east winds of 15 mph to 25 mph with gusts reaching 35 mph. Temperatures are expected to be in the lower 30s.
The Mauna Kea Access Road was closed as of 10:45 a.m. Tuesday at the Visitor Information Station because of snow and ice. The temperature was 36 degrees at the summit.
A winter weather advisory means that periods of snow, sleet or freezing rain will cause travel difficulties, according to the service, which cautioned drivers to be prepared for slippery roads and limited visibility.
