Special Olympics events
Two Special Olympics events are slated for Sunday.
The Law Enforcement Torch Run begins with registration at 7:15 a.m. at First Hawaiian Bank off Palani Road. At 8 a.m., participants will carry the “Flame of Hope” to Hale Halawai then end near the Kona Community Aquatic Center. A fee of $30 includes a commemorative shirt.
The Big Island Softball Tournament begins at 9 a.m. at Old Kona Airport Park. The tournament is a qualifier for the state competition on Oahu.

First Tee’s new session
The First Tee Hawaii Program will start a new session April 13 at Makalei Hawaii Golf Course. Registration for the one-hour program is 2 to 2:30 p.m. at the clubhouse. The session is for ages 7 to 18, and the fee for the year is $25 per child. Clubs are provided for beginners.
First Tee Program covers themes such as learning about respect.

Keoua Honaunau Canoe Club season underway
Keoua Honaunau Canoe Club has started its season.
Kamalii (10-18): 3:30 p.m. Mondays, Wednesday and Thursdays.
Women (all divisions): 4:30 p.m. Mondays, Wednesday and Thursdays.
Men (all divisions): 4:30 p.m. Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Practice sessions launch from the boat ramp at Honaunau Bay. All paddlers must be able to swim.
Paddlers younger than 18 need their parent’s or guardian’s signature.

Keoua Honaunau Canoe Club presents race
Keoua Honaunau Canoe Club’s “Mac-A-Thon” starts at 7 a.m. April 19. The races are 5K or 10K, from Honaunau Bay to Napoopoo.
Entry fees are $30 until April 15, and $40 on race day. Juniors (14-under) are $10 preregistered and $20 on race day. The fees include a pancake breakfast. Preregistered runners will receive race T-shirts.
There will be an award ceremony, entertainment and a silent auction.
Mailed entries must be postmarked by April 12, after which they must be turned in on race day before late registration closes at 6:30 a.m.

Horseshoe club extends a ‘hand’
Kona Horseshoe Pitchers Club invites the public to its annual “Hand of Friendship” tournament April 12 at the Old Kona Airport Park horseshoe courts. The tournament is sanctioned for singles play for NHPA cardholders, featuring four-six person divisions seeded by established handicap. The no handicap-cancellation play will begin at 8 a.m.
A $25 per person entry fee includes patches, plaques and prizes, and food and beverages. All players are eligible for extra cash prizes and gifts.

Pueo Kupuna softball golf fundraiser
The Pueo Kupuna softball team will hold its fifth annual golf tournament fundraiser April 27 at the Big Island Country Club. Tee time is at 7 a.m., and the format will be two-man scramble, modified best ball.

Wildcats football festivities
The Konawaena Wildcats football team will hold a celebration from 2 to 4 p.m. April 27 at Patz Pies at Paparoni’s in Captain Cook. The buffet is at 2 p.m.; the honors and awards presentations begin at 3.
Tickets, which include the buffet and prize drawings, are $20 in advance and can be purchased from the Konawaena High School athletic department.
A limited number of tickets will be available the day of the event for $25 each.
Summer hoops camp at Konawaena
The 2014 Hawaii Island Hoops College-Prep Basketball Camp will be held June 16 to 20 at Konawaena High School.
The camp, under the direction of Andy Smith, offers skill development for youngsters and introduces them to college-style workouts and training.
Smith will be joined on the teaching staff by college coaches from the junior college, NAIA and NCAA levels.
The camp fee is $350 and includes a jersey and shorts, college coaching and instruction, meals and seminars on academic requirements, financial aid and athletic recruitment.

High school rodeo at Paniolo Park
The Hawaii High School Rodeo at Paniolo Park in Waimea continues the first weekend of April and May. Saturday activities feature keiki and junior divisions; Sunday activities feature high school participants. The state finals junior division is May 9 to 11 and high school division is June 12 to 15.
The competition is free; donations are welcome. Food will be sold, with proceeds to benefit the program.

Basketball junior high league
The Hawaii County Department of Parks and Recreation will hold an instructional basketball league for children in grades six to eight.
The season starts this month. Games will be played Thursdays and Saturdays.

Gold Coast Little League softball

The Century ride on Saturday benefits North Hawaii Hospice. The ride starts and ends at Spencer Beach Park. Distances are 31 miles (starting at 8 a.m.), 62 miles (7:30) and 112 miles (6:30).
Entry fee is $60. Participants will receive a T-shirt, food at rest stops on the course and a barbecue after the rides.
The free 12.7-mile Hapuna Beach Training Time Trial starts at 8 a.m. April 19 at Hapuna Beach and ends at the Mauna Kea resort. Registration is at 7 a.m.
