Outstanding Older Americans awards luncheon scheduled
The annual Outstanding Older Americans awards luncheon will recognize 22 seniors from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. May 2 at Hilton Waikoloa Village in the Kona Ballroom.
Hawaii County’s Outstanding Older Americans for 2014 will be announced. Also featured will be individual recognition awards in four categories. Entertainment will be provided by Vizion 20/20.
Cost for the luncheon is $25 per person, tax and tip included. Free bus transportation to and from the event will be provided to the first 300 people who sign up. Call Hawaii County Office of Aging at 961-8600 for reservations.
Summer camp planned in Waimea
Hawaii Learning Resource is now accepting applications for its summer academic enrichment camp, Spy Camp, targeting diverse learners entering second through fifth grades in the 2014-15 school year. The two weekday camps focus on building on student’s learning skills in a fun, hands-on environment with an emphasis on observation, focus and listening. Parents of camp students will be provided with a better understanding of their child’s learning strengths and challenges and receive strategies and resources to help in school and at home.
The camps, developed in collaboration with Assets School, will be held at Kanu o ka Aina New Century Public Charter School in Waimea. The camps are taught by area educators trained by Assets School master teachers. Assets School is a private school located in Honolulu for dyslexic and gifted students. Grant funding to support the summer camps has been provided by the G.N. Wilcox Trust, Hawaii Community Foundation FLEX Grant and private donors.
Spy Camp Session 1 will be held from June 9 to 20 and Session 2 from June 23 to July 3. Camps hours are from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday. Enrollment is limited to 20 students per session. Early registration is encouraged.
Application packets are available on the Hawaii Learning Resource website, hawaiilearningresource.org, or by calling 885-9318. Camp tuition is $400 per student for each two-week session and does not include lunch. Healthy snacks and all camp supplies are included. Limited financial assistance is available to reduce the tuition. Minimum tuition is $200 per session.
Hawaii Learning Resource is a Waimea based 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization established in 1997, whose mission is to empower all kinds of learners through partnerships that bring advances in teaching and learning to the community.
Many scholarships offered to students
April 20 is the application deadline for 14 scholarships offered to West Hawaii students for 2014. These scholarships cover a range of study fields including agriculture, nursing, education and technical careers. Students can use the same application to apply for any or all of these scholarships. The Rotary Club of Kona Mauka scholarship committee will attempt to match students with the appropriate scholarship.
This years scholarships include :
• Kona Mauka Rotary Club Memorial Scholarship honoring Wayne Hedemann — a $2,000 award dispersed at $1,000 per year for two years open to any Kona Mauka area student.
• Kona Mauka Rotary Club Memorial Scholarship honoring Val Izuno — a $1,000 award open to any graduating Konawaena High School student
• Kona Mauka Rotary Club Memorial Scholarships honoring Mrs. Shizuko Teshima — $1,000; open to any Kona Mauka area student
• Kona Mauka Rotary Club Scholarship for Technical Career — two $500 scholarships for students who want a technical career and plan to use the scholarship for full-time study at the West Hawaii campus of Hawaii Community College.
• Cou Family Scholarship Award — $2,000 award dispersed at $1,000 per year for two years; open to all applicants who want to study culinary arts.
• America’s Mattress Golden Scholarship — $500; open to all applicants with a 3.2 grade point average or higher.
• Cynthia Irons Nursing Scholarship — $500; open to female applicants who want to study in a medical field.
• Hazel Fessler Scholarship — $1,000; open to any student who wants to study agriculture.
• Jean Holmquist Memorial Scholarship — $1,000; open to all applicants with a 3.0 GPA or higher.
• Carol Lu Rapp Memorial Scholarship — $500; open to all applicants with a 3.0 GPA or higher.
• Susan Sayre &Isabella Mustard Scholarship — $500; open to all applicants.
• Gerald Scoville Sr. Scholarship — $500; open to all applicants.
• Edith Crisp Memorial Scholarship — $1000; open to all applicants with a 3.0 GPA or higher who want to study education or training.
• Ruth Mac Kay Memorial Scholarship — $500; open to all applicants that want to study nursing.

Avocado Festival slated Saturday
Celebrating the versatile fruit that’s high in healthy, monounsaturated fat, the eighth annual Hawaii Avocado Festival is Saturday at the Sheraton Kona Resort &Spa at Keauhou Bay. The zero-waste event is 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the Bayfront Lawn. The free events offers two stages headlining entertainment, culinary and agricultural activities.
The festival opens with a Hawaiian pule and hula at 10 a.m. Enjoy a farmers market, arts and crafts booths and a University of Hawaii nutrition display. Food vendors and the Sheraton’s culinary team will offer tasty, avocado-themed cuisine. Hands-on fun for families includes games for keiki, free avocado and vegan products sampling and visits with Recycle Hawaii’s mascot, Recycle Dog.
In addition, 200 healthy, raw treats will be served to attending keiki as part of the local Feed the Children project. Keiki and adults can also participate in painting silk banners “to banish childhood hunger” as a prelude to the Project Hawaii Summer Edu-Camp that will be offered free to children in need.
The lineup for the entertainment stage is Aunt Irma’s Kahikina Nahe Nahe at 11 a.m., Bolo at noon, Manuel and Bernice at 1 p.m. and eco-fashion show at 2 p.m. Live entertainment continues until 5 p.m.
Children’s circus performing Saturday
The Sonshine Circus is coming to town from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Makua Lani Christian Academy lower campus on Palani Road.
The circus is an annual family event put on by school students. Circus acts include stilt walkers, musclemen, balance beam girls, a kendama presentation and more. In addition to the circus show that begins at 11:30 a.m., there will be game booths, prizes, food and cotton candy.
The performance is free and open to the public.
