The Kailua Village Artists featured artist for April is Linda Savell, who has devoted more than half a century to her work as a potter. Savell’s creations include elegant vessels, functional ware and a series of fish incorporating the harmony of form, patterns and colors that are finished in different types of glazes.

Savell, who creates her pottery at her Pali Uli Studio in South Kona, said, “Since each piece starts with a lump of clay, it is a thrill to see new ideas finally emerge from the glaze firing.”

She experiences this same thrill when opening her dichroic glass kiln and raku buckets, she said. This excitement, though fraught with some disappointments, continues to inspire new ideas. Her latest vessels, their forms and colors, were inspired by her trip to Dubai.

Savell’s creations include jewelry, necklaces and earrings made with dichroic glass. She incorporates them with handmade clay pieces and metals. Dichroic glass contains multiple layers of metal oxides, its uniqueness can be seen in movement, since its transmitted color is different that its reflected color.

The Kailua Village Artists Gallery is located in the Kona Marketplace, Suite C-110, on Alii Drive. To meet Savell and talk with the artist, visit the gallery April 16 and 23. The gallery is open daily from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
