On-road parking adds to dangers on Alii Drive

In response to Taky Tzimeas’s observation of how dangerous the narrow shoulders on Alii Drive have become for bicyclists, skateboarders, runners, walkers and in-line skaters, it has become treacherous for motor vehicles as well.

In observing the development trends along Alii Drive over the last decade, the condominiums at Alii Lani were allowed to be developed with inadequate on-site parking and so the overflow cars and trucks ended up being parked on Alii Drive. According to our zoning ordinances, there only needs to be parking spaces based on the number of kitchens instead of the number of bedrooms. This is the result: Excess vehicles are dumped onto our roadways.

The areas around Alii Lani need to be designated as no parking to avoid narrow shoulders. This becomes increasingly dangerous where there are telephone poles.

Hopefully Dru Kanuha, District 7 councilman, can address this issue and deem these areas no parking.
