Police seek Puna burglary suspect
Hawaii Island Police are asking for the public’s assistance in locating an 18-year-old Hilo man wanted on suspicion of burglary.
Darren K. Ornellas is described as a “local” male, 5 feet 5 inches tall, weighing about 135 pounds with a tan complexion, short brown hair and a light mustache. He is known to operate a brown 1992 Honda sedan with dark rims with a chrome finish ring and license plate HLS049.
At about 2:30 p.m. April 3, police responded to a report of a burglary in progress at a residence on 23rd Avenue in Hawaiian Paradise Park. A 62-year-old Keaau man reported seeing a suspicious man proceed to the front door of his neighbor’s residence and then to the rear of the residence, where he discovered signs of a break-in.
The neighbor reportedly confronted the suspect as he was seen running from the residence and toward another residence, where he ran into the bushes. Police learned that cash and electronic devices were stolen from the residence.
Detectives are continuing a first degree burglary investigation.

Man in custody after gunshots fired in Kailua Village
A 39-year-old man was in police custody Saturday afternoon following a report of gunshots fired in Kailua Village.
Kona Patrol officers responded about 12:05 p.m. to a report of gunshots fired by a man in the parking lot of a resort off of Alii Drive in Kailua-Kona, according to the Hawaii Police Department. Upon arrival, police determined the identify of the person believed to be responsible for discharging a firearm and arrested him without incident.
David Smart, a barista supervisor at Menehune Coffee across from Kailua Pier, said he was in the area at the time of the incident.
“I was trying to park my car and it had just happened and the police wouldn’t let me park,” he said. Smart said people were congregating near a rock wall mauka of the area where the gunshots were fired.
There were no reported injuries or damage, according to police.
