Caretaking of Hawaiian fishponds discussed
Hiilei Kawelo will present her lecture, “Mahia: Revitalization of the Fishpond Practitioner,” from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Friday in Keauhou Ballroom III at Sheraton Kona Resort &Spa at Keauhou Bay. The talk is free.

Library hosts story times for preschoolers
Kailua-Kona Public Library will present preschool story times at 9:30 a.m. Thursday and again April 17, 24 and May 8 in the children’s room.
The program is free for children ages 3 to 5 years old and includes stories, rhymes and songs. Parents and caregivers are welcome. Those requiring a sign language interpreter should request this service from the library seven days before the program.

Chinese healer offers qigong training
Kokolulu Farm and Retreats and Ning Jian Xiong from China are offering five- and 10-day intensive qigong training in Hawi.
Xiong is an internationally recognized teacher and healer who will present healing techniques that improve physical and mental health. The five-day training will be held April 22 through 26 and costs $1,550 for residential or $975 for nonresidential. The 10-day training will run April 22 through May 1. Cost is $2,700 for residential or $1,700 for nonresidential.
Xiong will also conduct individual sessions.

Traffic safety group meets Thursday
Kona Traffic Safety Committee meets at 5 p.m. Thursday in the Community Hale, Building G of the West Hawaii Civic Center on Kealakakehe Parkway.

Senior talent show slated Friday
Hawaii County Elderly Recreation Services is hosting the Big Island Senior Talent Show on Friday at Old Kona Airport Park Makaeo pavilion. A total of 278 seniors representing 19 senior clubs from around the island will come to Kailua-Kona to show off their talents to one another. Solo performances will begin at 10:30 a.m. followed by group performances.

Hawaii County Committee on the Status of Women meets at 9 a.m. Friday at Waimea Center, 65-1158 Mamalahoa Highway, Suite 2C, Waimea. The public is invited to attend.
Coffee berry borer program planned
Harry Arakaki of Organa Agriculture Hawaii Inc. will speak on how to eradicate the coffee berry borer with BAM, or Beneficial Active Micro-organisms, an organic, safe and environmentally friendly product, from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the Holualoa Elementary School cafeteria. The public is invited to attend. There is no charge.

Meetings encourage participation in Hawaiian nation building
The Office of Hawaiian Affairs is seeking volunteers to knock on doors and make phone calls to enroll Native Hawaiians in the nation-building process.
Town hall-style meetings are also scheduled at 6 p.m. Friday at Kahilu Town Hall in Waimea, 6 p.m. April 16 at the Old Kona Airport Park Makaeo pavilion in Kailua-Kona, 6 p.m. April 21 at Yano Hall in Kealakekua and 6 p.m. April 24 at Kohala Intergenerational Center.
