Trevithick earns Eagle Scout status
An Eagle Court of Honor was held Saturday for Daniel Ioana Trevithick of Boy Scout Troop 26 of Holualoa.
For his Eagle project, he oversaw the design, planning and building of a recycling center for the Ulu Wini housing project in Kailua-Kona. Additionally, he has earned 22 merit badges and served in numerous leadership positions in his troop. He is currently an assistant scoutmaster in troop 26.
He will graduate from high school in June and has been accepted at Youth With A Mission in Newcastle, Australia, where he will attend a discipleship training school this July, with an emphasis in music and art.
Parker students in art competition
Parker School students Nohili Thompson and Maria Navaro are among 16 finalists for the Second Congressional District Art Competition of 2014, according to Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard, D-Hawaii. Each spring, a nationwide high school art competition is sponsored by members of the U.S. House of Representatives. The contest is an opportunity to recognize and encourage creativity across Hawaii and the country.
The overall winner of the district-wide competition will be announced Saturday in a ceremony at the Hawaii State Capitol. The first-place piece will be displayed for one year in the U.S. Capitol alongside winners from all other congressional districts.
Gabbard also created a “People’s Choice” contest on her official Facebook page featuring all 16 finalists. The top entry with the most “likes” by 5 p.m. Thursday will be featured as the cover photo at the top of her official Facebook page and its creator will win a cash prize.
Whalen earns spot on APU dean’s list
Paul Whalen of Kailua-Kona has made the academic deans’ list at Azusa Pacific University in Azusa, Calif. Whalen is honored for a fall semester 2013 academic standing of a 3.5 or better grade-point average. Whalen is joined by 1,774 other students receiving the same honor.
Science fair winners announced
Makua Lani Christian Academy has announced the names of its lower campus science fair winners.
Second grade: first, Patrick Riehle; second, Alexis Leao; third, Olivia Estioko.
Third grade: first, Mika Casino; second, Kaleb Sotelo; third, Tritan Rivera.
Fourth grade: first, Josiah Kaaua; second, Jordan Hanano; third, Nuuhiwa Beatty.
Fifth grade: first, Raychelle Lorenzo; second, Iwa Sauer; third, Christopher Kerr.
Gala raises $215K for student tuition
Parker School held its ninth annual Kahiau dinner/auction gala for financial aid last month at the Fairmont Orchid, Hawaii. More than 230 people attended and helped the school raise over $215,000, a record so far for this event.
More than 50 percent of the 270 kindergarten through 12th grade students at Parker receive financial assistance, and Kahiau, the school’s largest fundraiser of the year, is key in making this possible. The Hawaiian word kahiau means “to give generously from the heart,” and every year the school puts on the gala so people can come together in a fun way while helping provide community children with a college-preparatory education at Parker.
Honokaa culinary students win medals
The Honokaa High and Intermediate School culinary teams of Mia Nakachi, Shereena Bird and Samantha Shea Miguel and Ashlynn Kaiamakini, Elijah Fernandez and Ethan McArdle earned silver medals at the inaugural CTE Culinary Performance-Based Assessment held March 7 and 8 at King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel.
The students were challenged with creating a grab n go meal for KTA stores, using local produce and a secret ingredient. The students represented Honokaa, bringing their knowledge of farm-to-table concepts as well as an international flair to their dishes. The team of Nakachi, Bird and Miguel have also qualified to compete at states.
Dunnington places at poetry competition
Parker School junior Sean Dunnington earned second place in the Poetry Out Loud State Finals at the Tenney Theatre, Cathedral of St. Andrew’s in Honolulu on March 2.
One of 15 contestants at the state level, Dunnington recited the poems “Momma Said” by Calvin Forbes, “The Chimney Sweeper: When My Mother Died I Was Very Young” by William Blake and “Self-Inquiry Before the Job Interview” by Gary Soto.
As the second place finisher, Dunnington received a writing journal, $100 cash and $200 to Parker School for the purchase of poetry books.
