DLNR seeks applicants for advisory councils
The Department of Land and Natural Resources’ Division of Forestry and Wildlife is accepting applications for vacant seats on the Laupahoehoe Advisory Council and the Puu Waawaa Advisory Council.
Laupahoehoe Advisory Council members provide guidance to DLNR and the Forest Service on issues related to management, research, education and public access in the Hawaii Experimental Tropical Forest and state lands in Hamakua. Puuwaawaa Advisory Council members provide guidance to DLNR for state lands in North Kona, including Puuwaawaa, Kiholo State Park Reserve, and the makai lands of Puuanahulu.
Applications and instructions can be found at hetf.us/page/home. Hard copy applications are also available at the Hilo Division of Forestry and Wildlife office at 19 E. Kawili St. They are due by May 4.

Business seminar slated Saturday
Hawaii Community Federal Credit Union hosts a free educational seminar on “How To Start A Small Business In Hawaii” from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at the John Y. Iwane Credit Union Center Training Room at its Kaloko facility.
The seminar will be presented by Hazel Beck, center director-West Hawaii for the Hawaii Small Business Development Center Network. The seminar will present easy-to understand topics that include: What is entrepreneurship? Why is a market analysis important? Which business process is right for me? How much capital do I need? Developing a business plan, and tips and how to avoid pitfalls.

Saturday book sale benefits libraries
The Friends of the Libraries, Kona will hold its next book sale from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday on the Kailua-Kona Public Library lanai. Proceeds from sales help support the needs of the Kona libraries, with funding for educational and entertainment programs, community summer reading programs, visiting authors, magazine subscriptions, CDs, DVDs and new book purchases.

Independence Day parade and fireworks scheduled
The Kailua-Kona Community Parade Association will hold the 19th annual Kailua-Kona Independence Day Parade at 6 p.m. July 4.
The parade will start at Kekuaokalani Gym on Kuakini Highway, head down Palani Road, then travel south on Alii Drive to Walua Road. Applications are available at paradesinkona.com or at the mayor’s office at West Hawaii Civic Center. They can also be obtained from Chauna Reese by emailing rcpreese@gmail.com or calling 313-0025.
The parade will be limited to around 65 entrants, with a June 24 deadline, but the cutoff may be sooner if capacity is reached. All are welcome, including community groups, nonprofit organizations or commercial entries. The theme is “United As One!”
Fireworks will be displayed over Kailua Bay at 8 p.m. Sponsors are needed for the parade and the fireworks. Information is available at paradesinkona.com, or call Barbara Kossow at the mayor’s office at 323-4448.
Vendors invited to church bazaar
Kauahaao Congrega-tional Church invites individuals and groups to be vendors at the church’s fundraising bazaar from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.
The church is at the corner of Mamalahoa Highway, Kamaoa Road and Pinao Street, just above the Wong Yuen Store and gas station in Waiohinu. The flea market is open to any club, church, school, athletic organization or individual. The charge for a 10-by-10-foot booth space is $10. Vendors are asked to bring their own tent, tables, chairs and generator if power is needed. The church will be selling laulau plate lunches, chili and rice, hot dogs and baked goods.

Earth Day hikes and meal planned
Kona Pacific Public Charter School invites the public to the school Saturday for its Earth Day hikes and farm-to-table picnic fundraisers. Forty-minute interactive hikes will be led by seventh-grade students and run every 20 minutes from 10 a.m. until 1:40 p.m. A donation of $5 to $10 per person is asked. The school is situated on more than 40 acres of private forested and old Kona field systems land. Hikers should wear comfortable shoes and bring a refillable water bottle. A farmers market and bake sale are also planned. Children younger than 5 are admitted free for all events.
One-hour family nature play classes will be lead at 10 a.m. and noon by Anna Tosick, environmental educator and seventh-grade class teacher. Cost per family is $10.
A farm-to-table picnic features local island products. Price for picnic lunch and hike is $20 per person. Tickets are available at the school or call to reserve a spot with Delania at 989-3227
The school is located above Kona Community Hospital.
