Easter cookie decorating class offered to keiki
Hawaii County Department of Parks and Recreation is taking registration for a free Easter craft class for children 6 to 14 through Monday. Participants will decorate a large, egg-shaped cookie from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. April 15 at the event at Kekuaokalani Gym.

Kendama festival planned Saturday
Big Island Wave Riders Against Drugs will host the Kona Kendama Festival from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Matsuyama Center on Hulikoa Drive in Kailua-Kona.
Cost to enter the festival is $5, with all proceeds benefiting the organization. Mini games, food booths and prizes will be included.

Korean War veterans meeting Saturday
Korean War Veterans Association of West Hawaii Chapter 279 meets at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Veterans of Foreign Wars meeting hall at the corner of Kuakini Highway and Makala Boulevard in Kailua-Kona.
Membership is open to any person who has seen honorable service in the Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force and Coast Guard if said service was within Korea including territorial waters and airspace from Sept. 3, 1945, to the present, or said service was outside of Korea from June 25, 1950, to Jan. 31, 1955. Associate members are also welcome.
Members, veterans, and friends are also invited to the funeral of Walter Sugi at noon Saturday at West Hawaii Veterans Cemetery. Uniform of the day will be dress shirt and hat with dark trousers.

Event for families planned Saturday
Neighborhood Place of Kona hosts a Celebrating Ohana event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Kona International Market. Community partner programs and agencies will provide free resources, games and activities for keiki. The event will include performances by Kona youth, a light lunch and door prizes and will raise awareness of child abuse during National Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention month.
Denny’s hosts fundraiser for Therapeutic Horsemanship
Denny’s Restaurant in Kailua-Kona will hold a Project Compassion event from 4 to 9 p.m. Saturday to benefit Therapeutic Horsemanship of Hawaii. This free event will feature entertainment by slack key guitarist Chris Yeaton and the Hawaiian Trio Lono Kanakaole. Miniature horses will also be present from 4 to 6:30 p.m. During the event, Denny’s will donate 20 percent of the food and beverage sale proceeds and the servers will donate all of their tips to Therapeutic Horsemanship of Hawaii.

Watershed talk held Saturday
Hawaiian Islands Land Trust will host a talk story about the watershed, plants and animals in the drainage at the Honolulu Coffee Company HCC coffee farm in South Kona.
Attendees should meet at 10 a.m. Saturday in the lower parking lot of the Kealakekua Ranch Shopping Center in Captain Cook. The group will carpool to the farm for the hourlong talk led by Rick Bennett.

Hula kahiko performance is Saturday
Volcano Art Center presents a hula kahiko performance with kumu hula Micah Kamohoalii and Halau Na Kupuupuu at 10 a.m. Saturday at the outdoor hula platform in the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

Waimea plant sale planned Saturday
Waimea Outdoor Circle’s Spring Plant Sale and 25th Anniversary Celebration will be held from 9 a.m to 1 p.m. Saturday at Ulu Laau, the Waimea Nature Park.
A variety of plants and trees, both native and indigenous and a homegrown selection from volunteers and from the greenhouse will be for sale. A guided park tour will highlight native plants and traverse the Waimea Streamside Trail. Participants will also learn how to keep Waimea coqui-free, discover the benefits of bokashi composting and learn how to control fire ants and fruit flies naturally. The event will also include food, a bake sale and gifts.
