National Weather Service forecasters in Honolulu have issued a wind advisory for the Big Island summits until 6 p.m. Monday.
Forecasters are calling for northeast winds around 35 mph to 50 mph with localized gusts topping 65 mph for the Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea summits above the 8,000-foot elevation.
The service cautioned that winds this strong can bring down tree branches and make driving difficult, especially for high-profile vehicles.
The Mauna Kea Summit Road was open as of 8:15 a.m. Monday, according to the Mauna Kea Weather Center. The temperature at the summit was 30.5 degrees.
A wind advisory for the summits means that sustained winds of at least 45 mph or gusts of at least 55 mph are forecast. Motorists are advised to use extra caution.
