Educators invited to development events
Online registration is now available for a weeklong series of educational events for school garden educators, teachers and others passionate about improving student wellness, cognitive development and engaging deeper learning.
Taking place June 7 to 12 in Waimea, the four professional development events focus on the effectiveness of school gardens as an instructional strategy for both nutritional education and hands-on learning in core subject areas.
The events include:
• Seventh annual School Learning Garden Symposium: “Awakening the Senses for Deeper Learning”
• AINA In Schools Garden and Nutrition Curriculum Training
• Ku Aina Pa Summer Intensive: “Growing the Connections: Common Core and STEM in the School Garden”
• Waimea School garden tours with Ming Wei Koh

Libraries observe Good Friday holiday
All public libraries will be closed Friday in observance of the Good Friday holiday and on Sunday for Easter. The Kailua-Kona, Kealakekua and Thelma Parker libraries will be open Saturday.
On the Good Friday holiday, all library services, including its website, will be unavailable because of an upgrade to its Internet access. This upgrade will increase the Internet speed of its nearly 800 public computers

PISCES reps speaking Friday
Rob Kelso and Rodrigo Romo from the Pacific International Space Center for Exploration Systems at the Imiloa Astronomy Center’s Maunakea Skies talk about how a lunar rover and the Robotic Village will play a role in “living off the land,” a concept that is vital to Earth’s next chapter in space exploration. The program starts at 7 p.m. Friday.
Kelso and Romo will showcase the newly-acquired PISCES Moon Rover, the first of its kind in Hawaii. The rover, a 726-pound robotic space vehicle, arrived in Hawaii in March, it is the size of a golf cart, and comes from Canada through an extended loan agreement with Ontario Drive Gear.

Self defense seminar slated Saturday
Aloha Krav Maga invites all ladies 12 and older in the Kailua-Kona area to attend a women’s self-defense seminar on Saturday. The two-hour seminar will cover how to defend against attacks including bear hugs, choke hold, hair pulls and wrist grabs. The cost of the seminar is $10 and space is limited. HPA book club meeting Thursday
The Hawaii Preparatory Academy Community Book Club meets at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Dyer Memorial Library on the school’s upper campus. Community Book Club meetings are free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served and participants are invited to bring a snack to share.
Lois Inman, Dyer Memorial librarian, and Jaime Johnson, upper school English teacher, will lead the group. The current book selection is “The World’s Strongest Librarian” by Josh Hanagarne.
This will be the last Community Book Club meeting for this school year. The club will resume in September and the book selection for that meeting will be “And the Mountains Echoed” by Khaled Hosseini.
