US must maintain commitment to UN
A new poll released this week by the Better World Campaign has found that even during this polarizing political time, there is one issue that voters agree on: The U.S. can’t go it alone to solve the world’s problems.
In fact, 86 percent of American voters agree it’s important for the U.S. to maintain an active role in the United Nations. Additionally, more than 7 out of 10 Americans believe that working through the U.N. to resolve international issues improves America’s image around the world. I’m one of them.
The U.S. has fallen behind on its dues to U.N. peacekeeping, but more than two-thirds of voters want the U.S. to both pay what is already owed and meet new commitments in the years to come. The U.S. cannot bear all the burden, and by maintaining an active and strong partnership with the U.N., we won’t have to.

Poindexter doing a commendable job
As the Hawaii County Council’s District 1 representative, I know Councilwoman Valerie Poindexter has done an outstanding job for her area. Just a look at the Honokaa Gym playground and skateboard park projects shows she has done a lot in such a short time.
What is the most outstanding characteristic of Poindexter is that she knows the concept of “ohana” extremely well. For instance, just the other day I didn’t even have an appontment and she saw me in her office and talked to me about an important issue which shows she cares.
We need more Poindexters on the Hawaii County Council. That way, the Big Island can move forward in a smoother manner.
