Paniolo Avenue now extends another three-fourths of a mile, county officials said Tuesday.

The county held a road blessing ceremony for the extension Tuesday morning.

“Two promises were made nearly 26 years ago,” Mayor Billy Kenoi said at the road opening. “Those promises were that the county would build affordable housing for Waikoloa Beach Resort workers, and that Paniolo Avenue would be extended. Today those promises have been fulfilled.”

The road extends from the Hooko Street traffic light near Waikoloa School to the Kamakoa Nui subdivision and Kamakoa Nui Park.

County officials said they expect the two-lane road will eventually be widened to a four-land road and connect with Queen Kaahumanu Highway and Kawaihae Road.

Landowner Waikoloa Heights Land Investors, whose principals are Bruce Bell and Jim Zurbuchen, built the road. Waikoloa Heights Land Investors agreed to complete the project at the county’s request, despite a 2013 Intermediate Court of Appeals ruling that said the landowner could not be required to do so.
