Special Olympics event today

Katie Moore Fitness in Kailua-Kona is hosting a Zumbathon for Special Olympics from 5:30 to 7 p.m. today. Tickets are $15.

Konawaena Cinco de Mayo golf fundraiser

The Konawaena golf team is hosting a benefit 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at Rosa’s Cantina and Sunset Grill on Alii Drive.

The special is a $10 taco plate. Festivities include drawings, with a chance to win a fishing charter with Capt. Jim on “Go Get Um.”

Donations are welcome.

Half-court hoops for 50-over

A 3-on-3 half-court league for players 50 and older is scheduled to start May 28 at Kekuaokalani Gymnasium.

The games are from 5 to 8:30 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays. There will be 12 teams.

Horseshoe club league starting

The Kona Horseshoe Pitchers Club will start its eight-week doubles league May 15. The games are from 4 to 6 p.m. at the horseshoe courts at Old Kona Airport Park.

League fees are $5 a week and include a prize and potluck party at the end of the league season. Players must be NHPA members and have their own shoes. Pitchers without partners will be matched up when possible.

High school rodeo at Paniolo Park

The Hawaii High School Rodeo at Paniolo Park in Waimea continues this weekend. Saturday activities feature keiki and junior divisions; Sunday activities feature high school participants. Events begin at 8 a.m. each day. The state finals junior division is May 9 to 11 and high school division is June 12 to 15.

The competition is free; donations are welcome. Food will be sold, with proceeds to benefit the program.

Konawaena football game and food drive

The Wildcats will partner with Hawaii Food Basket on May 30 for a food drive at their Green & White game at Konawaena High School.

Fans who donate four cans or five pounds of food will receive complimentary tickets to the game. Admission is $4 for adults; $2 for senior citizens; and free for children 12 and younger. Nonperishable food items must be in cans or unopened bags.

The Green & White game is scheduled for 7:30 p.m., preceded by a 5:30 flag football game between the police and fire departments.

Police department race benefit

The inaugural “Run To Honor” 5K run/2-mile walk/Keiki Fun Run will be May 17 at Liliuokalani Gardens in Hilo.

The run and walk start at 8:30 a.m., with check-in and registration 7 to 8 a.m. Entry fee is $25.

The Keiki Fun Run, for ages 6 to 14, starts at 9:30 a.m., with check-in and registration 7 to 9:15 a.m. The Fun Run is free.

T-shirts are included, and there will be food, entertainment and keiki activities.

Registration for Hilo’s triathlon

Hilo’s first official triathlon will start at 7 a.m. July 13 at James Kealoha Beach Park.

The Olympic-distance race — 1.5-km swim, 40-km bike ride and 10-km run — is limited to 500 participants.

Registration is $150 through May 30 and $175 to midnight June 30.

Hawaii Cycling Club events

  • The Upolu Airport Training Time Trial starts at 8 a.m. May 10 at the north end of Maluokalani Street and Highway 120. Registration for the 16-mile event will be from 7 to 7:40 a.m. in the middle of Maluokalani Street in Kawaihae.
  • The Saddle Road 40K Training Time Trial starts at 8 a.m. May 24 at mile marker 34.5 on Daniel K. Inouye Highway.

Registration will be from 7 to 7:45 a.m. in the Mauna Kea State Park parking lot. The course is entirely on the highway, heading south to the turnaround at mile marker 22 and returning to just before the 34.5 marker.

Summer hoops camp at Konawaena

The 2014 Hawaii Island Hoops College-Prep Basketball Camp will be held June 16 to 20 at Konawaena High School.

The camp, under the direction of Andy Smith, offers skill development for youngsters and introduces them to college-style workouts and training.

Smith will be joined on the teaching staff by college coaches from the junior college, NAIA and NCAA levels.

The camp fee is $350 and includes a jersey and shorts, college coaching and instruction, meals and seminars on academic requirements, financial aid and athletic recruitment.
