Let’s move ahead to solid waste plan
Richard Anthony is a well-meaning enthusiastic proponent of recycling, but his claim that the county process was biased in favor of large enterprises does not hold water. Hawaii County has been publicly wrestling with this issue for as long as most of us can remember. If someone had a better system ready to go, it would have been an easy matter to submit the preliminary proposal. We don’t have the luxury of waiting for an off-island consultant “building a partnership with local companies.” We need a turnkey bid on established technology.
If I need a truck, I go to the dealers that have them, not a consultant who wants to get into the truck business. Just do it.

Flags’ presentation in town a disgrace
We’re proud Americans, right? We have veterans, right? We proudly display the colors, the symbols that represent freedom and what our country stands for, right? And we follow protocols — proud to be Americans.
If you think the answer to that question is “right” — then stop by the corner of Queen Kaahumanu Highway and Palani Road at night and get ready for a “jolt.” You’ll see just how little the shops care — while our flags flounder.
My heart breaks for all those who have served our country. Is this how we show our appreciation for their sacrifices?

Removing librarians from schools a step backward
To allow students earlier education through required early preschool is good but then to remove librarians who can help the children seems to be a step backward.
Students of all ages need to be able to get help in seeking books either for reference or the simple pleasure of reading. All students need to read and learn.
I hope our schools can continue to have trained librarians to keep up with other schools on the mainland.
