Orchid Society holds Mother’s Day show
Kona Orchid Society will hold its annual Mother’s Day show and sale from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at the Old Kona Airport Makaeo Pavilion.
There will be several orchid and plant vendors and craft vendors. Admission is free.
Rubbie Duckie Race set for July 4
Kings’ Shops will host the 23rd annual Rubber Duckie Race July 4 to raise funds for the United Cerebral Palsy Association of Hawaii.
Free activities begin at 11 a.m. including live entertainment and a watermelon eating contest. The race is scheduled for 3 p.m., followed by duck waddling and duck calling contests.
Between the first week of June and July 4, adoption certificates will be sold at the Kings’ Shops Management Office. Mail-in order forms will be available at various locations or at KingsShops.com. Adoption are of $5 per duck, or adopt four ducks and receive t-shirt for a $25 donation. All proceeds benefit United Cerebral Palsy Association of Hawaii. The first 50 duckies who cross the finish line each win one of the 50 prizes which total more than $25,000.
Words and Wine scheduled Tuesday
Authors Jana Bogs, Carla Hannaford and Jonathan Rowe will be featured during Kona Stories Book Shop’s Words and Wine event at 6 p.m. Tuesday in Keauhou Shopping Center.
Bogs is a nutritionist with a PhD in horticulture. Her book “Beyond Organic – Growing for Maximum Nutrition” is full of practical information which will make gardens healthier from the soil up.
Hannaford is a biologist, author and counselor for children with learning difficulties. She will discuss the Dominance Factor, which explores the links between the side of the body we favor for seeing, hearing, touching, and moving and the way we think, learn, play, and relate to others.
Rowe worked as a trial attorney and his book “The River of Strange People” is a literary page-turner that crisscrosses the centuries to examine the histories and legends of those who have sought the fountain of youth.

Higher education in West Hawaii discussed Wednesday
Marty Fletcher, the new director of Hawaii Community College and UH Center, West Hawaii in Kealakekua, will present information about what the university currently offers in West Hawaii from 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesday in Waikoloa.
Fletcher will also discuss Hawaii Community College — Palamanui, the new higher education facility under construction in Kona.
