LIHUE, Kauai — Kauai’s utility is restoring power after an island-wide blackout.

Kauai Island Utility Cooperative spokeswoman Shelley Paik said Thursday that power went out starting shortly before 10 a.m.

The outage was triggered when the utility lost its second largest generator. The outage then spread around the island.

Power has since been restored to 85 percent of Kauai.

Paik says parts of Lihue, Princeville, Koloa, Hanamaulu and Kaumakani were still without power before noon. It’s expected to take one to two hours to restore electricity to these areas.

The utility isn’t sure what caused the generator to go out. The generator is at Port Allen on Kauai’s west side.
