LIHUE, Kauai — Kauai’s utility has restored power to all of its customers after an island-wide blackout.

Kauai Island Utility Cooperative spokeswoman Shelley Paik said Thursday that power went out starting shortly before 10 a.m.

The outage was triggered when the utility lost its second largest generator. The outage then spread around the island.

Power was restored to all 30,000 cooperative customers by 11:51 a.m.

The generator at Port Allen on Kauai’s west side went offline when a fuel valve failed. Other generators weren’t able to cover for the loss, tripping them off. The utility says circuits on the grid shut down until additional generation could be brought online.

The generator is being repaired. The utility is assessing why the fuel valve failed.
