Membership meeting held at American Legion
American Legion Post 20 will hold its general membership meeting at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday.
The guest speaker is Matthew Handel, readjustment counselor with The Department Of Veterans Affairs.

Class helps seniors protect against fraud
Elderly Activities Division and the Senior Medicare Patrol will host a free seminar on protecting against identity theft and Medicare fraud from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at West Hawaii Civic Center Building G.
Learn how to protect yourself, family members and friends from becoming victims of Medicare ID theft, fraud, abuse and billing errors. Find out who to contact with questions about Medicare fraud. Senior Medicare Patrol will have representatives on hand for individual consultation after class.

Net making class offered
David Coy will lead classes on knots and net making from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Wednesdays May 14 through June 4 at Yano Hall in Captain Cook.
Classes will cover the building and repair of cargo nets, bags, throw nets and fish traps. The class will provide information on the sustainable use of these tools.
Cost for the four sessions, including supplies, is $25. Registration is required. Contact county Parks and Recreation Culture and Education Section at 961-8706 to reserve space.
Tree care safety workshop is May 23
The Hawaii Island Landscape Association, the University of Hawaii Cooperative Extension Service, along with the Aloha Arborist Association and Western Chapter – International Society of Arboriculture will host a tree care safety workshop from 8 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. May 23 at Queens’ MarketPlace.
The featured speaker will be John Ball, professor of forestry at South Dakota State University.
Cost for the workshop is $80 for members of the sponsoring associations and $110 for nonmembers who register by Tuesday. After that date, the cost is $105 for members and $130 for nonmembers. Lunch is included.

Children’s book illustrators give presentation
Children are invited to meet Mike Austin, the author and illustrator of “Junkyard” and hear the story from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Kona Stories bookstore in Keauhou Shopping Center.
The free event is geared for children ages 4 through 8 and is held during the 95th annual Children’s Book Week.
Joining Austin will be illustrator Jing Jing Tsong with her book Bucket of Blessings.
Pualu Award nominations due by May 23
The Kona-Kohala Chamber of Commerce is seeking nominations for its annual Pualu Awards to recognize individuals, businesses and nonprofit organizations which exemplify a commitment to the improvement and advancement of the West Hawaii community.
Nominations are being accepted in seven categories: Community Education, Environmental Awareness, Lifetime Service, Culture and Heritage, Chamber Member of the Year, Visitor Industry Marketing Award.
Nomination forms and more information are available by calling the Kona-Kohala Chamber of Commerce office at 329-1758. Self-nominations are welcome and names of nominators will not be revealed.
Nomination forms must be received by 4 p.m. May 23 in the Chamber office. Winners will be honored June 27 at the Chamber’s annual Installation and Awards luncheon at the Four Seasons Resort Hualalai.
Medicine making class offered
David Bruce Leonard will teach a four-day intensive course on making medicine from locally available plants at the Amy B.H. Greenwell Ethnobotanical Garden in Captain Cook.
Plant Medicine Intensive will be offered from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday through Sunday. Participants must register and pay in advance. To register, call 323-3318 or email agg@bishopmuseum.org.
Online library course not available during upgrade
The Hawaii State Public Library System’s Microsoft IT Academy, a free digital literacy and technology training resource, will not be available May 29 through June 1 while a new Microsoft Online Learning Platform is being installed. The new platform will go live June 2.
Partially completed courses will not be transferred to the new platform. Patrons have the option of finishing their course before Thursday, May 15 or retaking the course from the beginning after June 2.
