HONOLULU — A spike in the number of citations for trespassing on a closed state park has prompted a reminder from state officials.
The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports the trespassing is taking place at Sacred Falls State Park.
The Oahu park was closed to the public after eight people were killed in a rock slide in 1999.
Yet, despite signs telling people the area is closed, state Department of Land and Natural Resources officials say people continue to hike in the park. About 30 people were cited from March to April, and most of those went to out-of-state residents and U.S. military personnel.
Division of State Parks Director Dan Quinn encourages people to enjoy other state parks and trail systems that are open.
Trespassing could cost someone $100 on a first offense.
