Free tennis lessons at Holua

Holua Resort will hold free tennis clinics May 31 through the “Tennis Across America” program of the United States Professional Tennis Association.

Tennis professional Don Guluzzy will conduct the three one-hour sessions, which will be 8 to 11 a.m. Racquets and balls will be provided.

Basketball camp set for Honokaa

The Big Island All-Stars Honokaa Basketball Camp will be held May 30 to June 1 at Honokaa Parks and Recreation Gym.

The camp is for children who just completed kindergarten through eighth grade.

Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. May 30 for kindergarten through third grade, or 8 and younger; noon for fourth- through eighth-graders, or keiki 9 and older.

The session for the younger group runs 8:30 a.m. to noon, while the older group goes 1 to 4:30 p.m.

The $50 fee — payable to Big Island All-Stars with “Honokaa Basketball Camp” in the memo — and application are due by May 21. Mail them to Daphne Honma, P. O. Box 355, Paauilo, HI 96776.

Walk-ins will be accepted, but each session is limited to 90 applicants.

Applications can be picked up at Honokaa Gym from Anna Muranaka or at Honokaa High and Intermediate School, ask for Daphne Honma.

20th annual King’s Swim

Kona Aquatics will host the 20th annual King’s Swim on July 5 at Kailua Bay.

The 1.2-mile course begins at Kailua Bay and ends at Kamakahonu Bay. No wetsuits or fins are permitted.

Applications are available at Bikeworks in Kona. A nonrefundable entry fee of $15 must accompany application. The registration deadline is June 30. Late registration will be held at Kailua Pier on race day from 6:30 to 7:30 a.m. for $20.

Division awards will be presented to the top three finishers and special prizes will be drawn throughout the postrace ceremonies.

Volunteers with kayaks, surfboards, or stand-up paddleboards who volunteer for safely patrol are welcome. Please report to the pier before 7:30 a.m.

Police department race benefit

The inaugural “Run To Honor” 5K run/2-mile walk/Keiki Fun Run will be Saturday at Liliuokalani Gardens in Hilo.

The run and walk start at 8:30 a.m., with check-in and registration 7 to 8 a.m. Entry fee is $25.

The Keiki Fun Run, for ages 6 to 14, starts at 9:30 a.m., with check-in and registration 7 to 9:15 a.m. The Fun Run is free.

T-shirts are included, and there will be food, entertainment and keiki activities.

Big Island soccer camp at HPA

The Big Island I.D. Soccer Camp will be held June 23-26 at Hawaii Preparatory Academy.

The camp, featuring guest coaches from Southern California’s top club programs, is divided into two sessions:

Youth Camp, Under 7-U14, runs from 8 a.m. to noon.

College I.D. Camp, U15-U18, runs from 3 to 6 p.m.

Cost is $165 per camper.

The guest coaches include:

  • Jeff Illingworth, former Director of Coaching at CV Manchester United FC, now coaching with the San Diego Surf, and representing Pro I.D. Soccer Camps. He has coached in Southern California for 33 years. Pro I.D. Soccer Camps send the USA’s top talent to Manchester City’s Youth Academy in England.
  • Andy Hargreaves, who has 25 years of coaching youth soccer in Southern California with top clubs like Nomad, Surf, and DMVC Sharks. He is currently the head coach of nationally renown Torrey Pines High School in San Diego, and a staff coach at RSF Attack. Hargreaves’ programs have produced hundreds of collegiate and professional players over the years.
  • Vince La Porta, who has coached youth soccer across the U.S. for 15 years while playing semi-pro and professional soccer in California and Massachusetts. He currently serves as Director of Coaching at Kona Crush Soccer Academy and as a staff coach for Hawaii State ODP.

Horseshoe club league starting

The Kona Horseshoe Pitchers Club will start its eight-week doubles league Thursday. The games are from 4 to 6 p.m. at the horseshoe courts at Old Kona Airport Park.

League fees are $5 a week and include a prize and potluck party at the end of the league season. Players must be NHPA members and have their own shoes. Pitchers without partners will be matched up when possible.

Drop-in play is from 9 a.m. to noon Wednesdays.

The Hawaii High School Rodeo at Paniolo Park in Waimea features the state finals high school division June 12 to 15.

Pickleball classes

The Holua Pickleball Ohana is offering beginner, intermediate and advanced classes at 3 p.m. Wednesday.

A 3-on-3 half-court league for players 50 and older begins May 28 at Kekuaokalani Gymnasium.

Konawaena football game and food drive

The Wildcats will partner with Hawaii Food Basket on May 30 for a food drive at their Green & White game at Konawaena High School.

Fans who donate four cans or five pounds of food will receive complimentary tickets to the game. Admission is $4 for adults; $2 for senior citizens; and free for children 12 and younger. Nonperishable food items must be in cans or unopened bags.

The Green & White game is scheduled for 7:30 p.m., preceded by a 5:30 flag football game between the police and fire departments.

Senior kicker John Replogle will be honored at a halftime ceremony for accomplishments that earned him a spot on the 2013 All-BIIF First Team.

Registration for Hilo’s triathlon

Hilo’s first official triathlon will start at 7 a.m. July 13 at James Kealoha Beach Park.

The Olympic-distance race — 1.5-km swim, 40-km bike ride and 10-km run — is limited to 500 participants.

Registration is $150 through May 30 and $175 to midnight June 30.

Summer hoops camp at Konawaena

The 2014 Hawaii Island Hoops College-Prep Basketball Camp will be held June 16 to 20 at Konawaena High School.

The camp offers skill development for youngsters and introduces them to college-style workouts and training.

Teaching staff will include college coaches.

The camp fee is $350 and includes a jersey and shorts, meals and seminars on academic requirements, financial aid and athletic recruitment.
