Hickey to discuss Social Security
Ed Hickey, AARP volunteer educator, will present “Social Security 101” from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Tutu’s House in Waimea.
Social Security retirement benefits provide eligible workers as well as their spouses, survivors and dependent children with monthly income. While this monthly benefit was never meant to replace all of a person’s earnings, it serves as the base of retirement for many retired workers. Those attending will learn how the benefit works, when they can be collected and how to maximize benefits.
There are no fees for Tutu’s House programs, although donations are appreciated.
Fisheries Council meeting Thursday
The West Hawaii Fisheries Council meets from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the West Hawaii Civic Center Community Hale. Sierra Tobiason, coordinator of the South Kohala Coastal Partnership and Hawaii Island extension agent for University of Hawaii Sea Grant College Program, will present updates on the implementation of the South Kohala Conservation Action Plan. The presentation will highlight the conservation targets, threats and strategies identified in the plan, and provide updates on current projects that monitor and reduce these threats to the coral reef ecosystem.
The council is also looking for new members from the West Hawaii fishing community, including shoreline and recreational fishermen from various districts up and down the West Hawaii coastline. Visitors and potential members are welcome to attend.

County band performs Friday
The West Hawaii County Band pays tribute to young musicians in the community for its 6:30 p.m. concert Friday at Hale Halawai. The performance will showcase the Kealakehe Intermediate School Chorus as it sings “Over the Rainbow” and other songs with the band and will also feature works such as “Flight of the Bumblebee” and “Pure Imagination.”

Food manufacturers meeting Tuesday
Hawaii Food Manufacturers Association-Hawaii Island Chapter meets from 3 to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at the West Hawaii Civic Center Community Hale, Building G. There is no charge to attend.
Statewide President Byron Goo will talk about the association, its future and benefits of membership. The free event is open to food manufacturers and related providers such as printing, packaging, ingredients, materials, and logistics.

Inclusive work force seminar offered
“Building an Inclusive Workforce” will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday at King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel.
Lou Orslene, co-director of Job Accommodation Network, will address the interactive accommodation process, eight types of low-cost accommodations, assistive technology and accommodation resources for employers. Lunch is included.
Registration begins at 10:30 a.m. The event is funded by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Employment Training Administration, Disability Employment Initiative. Lunch is included.
