HONOLULU — A man is in serious condition and under arrest after driving a van into Waikiki’s Ala Wai Canal.

The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports police say the van was reported stolen and hit a coconut tree before plunging into the murky water.

Paramedics say the 29-year-old driver lost control of the speeding van and plunged into the canal early Wednesday.

The newspaper reports police arrested the driver on suspicion of driving under the influence of an intoxicant, driving without a license and auto theft.

The driver was able to get out of the water on his own. Paramedics took him to a hospital in serious condition.

A tow company was having trouble getting the vehicle out of the water.
