Retirement is topic of three workshops
AARP is offering three free workshops to help people understand how to plan and save money for retirement on Saturday at the West Hawaii Civic Center.
• “Financial Basics for Pre-Retirees” meets from 8:30 a.m. to noon. Participants will learn the basics about Social Security and Medicare and how to maximize benefits. The challenges facing Hawaii residents related to family caregiving and long-term adult care and support available will also be discussed.
• “10 Steps to a Secure Retirement,” offered from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m., explores the idea of retirement as a transition, helping participants visualize goals, understand options and identify the steps needed to build retirement security and live the life they want as they get older.
• “Life Reimagined Check Up,” from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., helps participants understand where they are in life and what their next move could be.

Homeless cat helpers meet Saturday
AdvoCats meets at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Kona Vistas community center on Pualani Street. off of Lako Street. The Hawaii County-endorsed nonprofit “trap-neuter-release” organization is committed to solving the homeless cat problem in a humane way.
The agenda includes the clinic planned for Wednesday and ways to involve the community. Those attending are asked to bring ink cartridges for recycling. The group also needs the community’s help feeding and trapping homeless cats.

Green Party convenes Saturday
The annual state convention of the Green Party of Hawaii to elect officers and delegates begins at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Hawaiian Acres Community Association Center at 16-1325 Moho Road, Puna. The event begins with potluck meal — rice and vegan and meat chili will be provided. Those attending are asked to bring a dish to share.

Dance workshop slated Saturday
An Infinity Dance workshop is scheduled from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at the Warehouse, Club Rehab, 79-7422 Mamalahoa Highway in Kealakekua. Marya Mann, co-author of “Healing Our Planet, Healing Our Selves” and a clinical wellness consultant and yoga teacher in Kealakekua, will teach the workshop.
Drawing from yoga, her work with psychological kinesiology and cross-cultural dancing including hula, sacred dance and indigenous trance dancing, Infinity Dance balances and harmonizes the body and mind, producing a state of tranquility and grace, Mann said.
The fee is by donation. Suggested donation is $20 to $30.
VFW auxiliary meeting Saturday
The Ladies Auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 12122, meets at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the Veterans Center on Makala Boulevard.
Fundraising dinners and dances will be held May 23 and 30. The May 23 event will feature Ono Gumbo band with the menu of red beans and rice. The May 30 event will feature Johnny Shot Band with the menu of lemon chicken and rice pilaf. Both events are $10 for the dinner and $5 cover charge for the band.

Palace event honors King Kamehameha IV
The Daughters of Hawaii and Calabash Cousins present Afternoon at Hulihee at 4 p.m. Sunday at Hulihee Palace to remember the late King Kamehameha IV. The Merrie Monarchs and kumu hula Etua Lopes and his Halau Na Pua Ui O Hawaii will perform.
Afternoon at Hulihee is part of the palace’s series of free monthly concerts that honor Hawaii’s past monarchs and historical figures; donations are appreciated. Bring a beach mat or chair as seating won’t be provided.
