WAILUKU, Maui — Now that Maui’s police chief has announced his retirement, the Maui Police Commission is moving forward with finding his successor.

Chief Gary Yabuta says he’s retiring in the next two months to take a new position with a federal anti-drug trafficking task force.

Commission Chair Roger Dixon says the commission will use all its available resources to identify and review quality candidates.

The commission vows to remain transparent during the search and selection process.

The commission congratulates Yabuta and says his 31 years of services has left a significant impact on many in the community.

Yabuta will become the director of High Intensity Drug Trafficking Areas for Hawaii.
