Hawaii Community College’s Office of Continuing Education and Training is piloting a Summer Career Explorations program focusing on careers in the marine industry. Targeting high school students, Summer Career Explorations seeks to align its program and course offerings not only with CTE Pathway goals for career awareness and exploration, but with the needs and wants of the students.

With assistance from community members, school staff and peer mentors, a Summer Career Explorations interest survey was administered to the students of Kealakehe High School earlier this year. The survey results determined which career options are of most interest to the students. According to the interest surveys completed, marine and aquaculture careers topped the list of students’ interest.

The survey results led to the development of this summer’s pilot program. Highly experiential in nature, the activities will provide students a representative glimpse into the types of skills and activities related to marine-related careers. Students participating in this program will explore a variety of marine career options including those in nonprofit, private, governmental, military, academic, artistic and cultural.

The Marine Summer Career Explorations runs June 16 to 27 from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily and will be based at the Kona Community Cultural and Education Foundation at Keauhou Bay. Teens who have any interest in marine and aquaculture careers are encouraged to enroll in the program. At completion participants will receive 0.5 high school elective credit.
