Auxiliary offers nursing scholarship
The Kona Community Hospital Auxiliary is accepting applications from students wishing to receive a $2,500 scholarship to pursue a career in nursing. Applications forms are available at kchauxiliary.org or at the hospital’s nursing administration office or education department. Completed applications must be postmarked by June 9, and interviews will be held June 16.
To qualify, an applicant must already be accepted into an accredited school of mursing and not already be a registered nurse.

Public libraries host reading programs
Readers of all ages are invited to participate in the 2014 Hawaii State Public Library System summer reading programs, which run from Sunday through July 12. Registration for the free six-week programs at all public libraries statewide began Tuesday. Contact a local library for dates and other guidelines.
Participants who visit their library and read at least one book per week are eligible to receive a free weekly reading incentive, while supplies last. In addition to reading, the programs will feature performances by artists from the University of Hawaii’s Statewide Cultural Extension Program. Performance programs will be highlighted on the HSPLS website.
This year’s programs will explore all things related to science. The children’s summer reading program theme “Fizz, Boom, Read” will allow children — preschool-age to those entering sixth grade this fall — to experiment with building lava lamps, launching rockets and creating a solar system mobile.
Science exploration continues for teens — students entering seventh grade to 2014 high school graduates — with “Spark a Reaction,” the theme of the teen summer reading program, and for adults — patrons age 18 and older — with “Literary Elements,” the adult summer reading program.

SKEA offering summer art camp
The Society for Kona’s Education and Arts will hold its summer art campfor children ages 6 to 11 from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday, June 9 to 20 at its building in Honaunau. The theme is “Summer Safari” and activities with local artists include pottery, multimedia, music, dance, painting, outdoor activities and field trips.

Officer to be honored at June 4 luncheon
The Kona Crime Prevention Committee will honor Officer Jason Foxworthy as its Officer of the Month at noon June 4.
The guest speaker will be County Consumer Protection Advocate Gary Nuss.
