Seniors meet Wednesday
The Kailua-Kona Seniors will meet at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Hale Halawai for a quarterly business meeting followed by celebrating members’ May and June birthdays. Board games will follow, as well as lei making.
Laura Gulluzy of Compassionate Home Care will be at the meeting distributing information members have previously requested.

Hui hosting guest speaker
West Hawaii Hui Laulima meets from 10:30 a.m. to noon Friday in the West Hawaii Community Health Center community meeting room. The guest speaker is Bev Fraser, executive director of Friends of the Children of West Hawaii, friendsofthechildrenwh.com. The nonprofit organization provides assistance to children who have been traumatized by sexual assault, physical abuse or neglect or who are witnesses to violent crime.

Philippine culture celebrated at festival
The Kona Visayan Club, along with the Filipino community in Kona, invite the public to a festive day of music, dance, food, a fashion show and more at the second annual Philippine Cultural Festival from noon to 6 p.m. Saturday on Hale Halawai’s north lawn on Alii Drive.
The public is invited to experience the colorful sights, sounds and foods of the Philippines. This event is free and open to the public.

Support group for the blind meets Thursday
The West Hawaii Chapter of the National Federation of the Blind meets at 10 a.m. Thursday at Hale Halawai.
Guest Mary Roblee will tell the group about a volunteer program she was associated with in Massachusetts. The meetings are open to anyone interested in learning about living with failing vision.

Literacy Council meeting Friday
Kona Literacy Council meets at 1 p.m. Friday at the Kailua Learning Center located at the Kailua Village condominiums, 75-5766 Kuakini Highway, No. 106A.

Orchid Society meets Friday
Kona Orchid Society meets 6 p.m. Friday at Kona Methodist Church on Palani Road. The group will not meet at Hualalai Academy until further notice.
Glen Barfield will be the featured speaker. He will talk about Stelis orchids and the care and growing of them. Barfield will also bring plants for sale, and plants may be ordered ahead of time.
Attendees should bring a dish to share during the potluck at 6:15 p.m. Members are also asked to bring a blooming plant that is free from pests for show and tell.

Seniors hold line dance event in Hilo
Kupuna from around Hawaii will perform at the 13th Big Island Senior Line Dance Roundup on Friday at the Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium in Hilo.
“I Live to Dance” will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Admission is free.
This year’s event will again feature a mass dance that gives audience members a chance to join in the fun. For more information, call program director Margaret Yafuso at 966-5801.
Alzheimer’s Association offers free seminars
Chris Ridley will present “What Is Dementia?” at 6 p.m. Friday at the Regency at Hualalai, 75-181 Hualalai Road. The seminar will include the latest information on the warning signs of dementia. Information on dementia, stages, symptoms and treatments will be provided.
Ridley will present “Legal Affairs and Dementia” at 9 a.m. Saturday. This presentation will discuss dementia and potential legal needs, legal capacity, advance health care directives, financial planning and organizing legal financial affairs. At 11 a.m., the movie, “A Song For Martin,” in which one of the characters has Alzheimer’s disease will be shown. Finally, “Challenging Behaviors in Dementia” will include information on why behaviors occur and possible interventions at 1 p.m.

Fundraiser planned for Mission in Uganda
“An Evening of Southern Gospel and Hula” will feature the Southern Cross Singers, OVECC Hula, the Marshallese Choir, and a slide show on Uganda at 6 p.m. Saturday at Ocean View Evangelical Community Church, 92-8977 Leilani Circle in Ocean View.
The event is free, but a freewill offering will be taken to raise funds for Mission in Uganda, which supplies safe drinking water systems, medical help and facilities maintenance at schools and in villages and prisons.
