Guided meditation classes offered
Gavin Harrison leads Walking Meditation in the Wild from 8:30 to 10 a.m. on the first Saturday of each month at Iole, the Historic Bond Homestead, at 53-496 Iole Road in Kapaau. Participants should bring a hat, hiking shoes, water, a cushion for rest stops, rain gear and mosquito repellent. There is no charge, but a donation of $10 to $15 is suggested. Harrison also leads a sitting and walking meditation with dialogue, and meditation guidance from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. June 15 at Waimea Events Salon, 66-1664 Waiaka St. The event is usually held on the first Sunday of each month. Camp Tarawa Detachment plans barbecue Luncheon
The Camp Tarawa Detachment 1255 of the Marine Corps League invites members of the military, past or present, and their guests to its annual barbecue potluck luncheon June 21 at Spencer Beach Park.
This social gathering, from 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., will provide an opportunity for the community to learn about the detachment’s mission to keep alive the history of Camp Tarawa.
Membership is open to active, reserve or retired Marines and Navy corpsmen. Associate membership is available for any individual who has an interest in military history, especially that of Hawaii Island during World War II.
The detachment will provide hot dogs, hamburgers, chili, condiments, water and paper products. Those attending are asked to bring their own beverage and an appetizer, salad, side dish or dessert to share.

Memoir writing workshop planned
Novelist and writing instructor Darien Gee, author of “Writing the Hawaii Memoir: Advice and Exercises to Help You Tell Your Story,” is offering a writing workshop from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at Anna Ranch Heritage Center in Waimea. Built on the principles shared in her book, the session will help aspiring memoirists on the path to starting — and finishing — a manuscript.
The workshop fee is $35. A $45 package including the workshop fee and a copy of her book is also available. To register, contact Gee at 937-7358.
Mauna Kea weed removal day planned
The Office of Mauna Kea Management is seeking community volunteers to participate in its next Malama Maunakea campaign set for Saturday. Community members are encouraged to sign up to volunteer and help protect the mountain’s fragile resources.
The Saturday weed pull will concentrate on eradicating the invasive fireweed, Senecio madagascariensis, along the Mauna Kea Access Road and around Halepohaku at the approximately 9,200 feet elevation.

Punana Leo o Kona benefit dinner held at Hulihee Palace
Punana Leo o Kona, in partnership with The Daughters of Hawaii, will host “Kupapalani,” a 20th anniversary fundraiser banquet for Kona’s only Hawaiian medium preschool.
The event will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Hulihee Palace and features Na Hoku Hanohano award winners Kainani Kahaunaele and Brother Noland, emcee Aaron Sala, a Hawaiian dinner menu and a silent auction. Those who purchase tickets will help the school achieve its mission and belief that Hawaiian should once again be a common language heard in this land.

Solar cook-offs scheduled
One Island, a nonprofit education center sponsored by Heritage Ranch, will host a free solar cook-off from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at the Hawi Farmers Market and from 9 a.m to noon June 15 at South Kona Green Market.
The organization has three types of solar cookers that will be tested side-by-side. The public is invited to see them in action, all powered by the sun. A solar electric bike and micro solar systems will also be on exhibit.

Habitat for Humanity holds fundraiser
Habitat for Humanity West Hawaii will host its second Project Compassion Dinner from 4 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Denny’s Restaurant.
In addition to a silent auction, and live music, 20 percent of all evening food sales and all customer tips will go to Habitat West Hawaii’s July Build-A-Thon. Additionally, special political guest hosts will be on hand to discuss the issues important to the West Hawaii community.
Videoconference covers eye conditions
A live videoconference on common eye conditions affecting seniors will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. June 9 at Kaiser Permanente Hilo Clinic, 1292 Waianuenue Ave. A Kaiser Permanente eye doctor will explain cataracts, glaucoma and macular degeneration. Attendees will learn about the causes, treatment and prevention options available.
