A 32-year-old Honokaa man accused of causing a traffic accident almost 21 months ago near Kalopa that killed two women and injured several other people was arrested Tuesday.

Alfred Berdon III was charged with two counts each of first-degree negligent homicide, first-degree negligent injury and second-degree negligent injury. He was indicted for the offenses by a Hilo grand jury last month.

He was released after posting $32,000 bail.

Berdon appeared Wednesday afternoon before 3rd Circuit Judge Greg Nakamura. He told the judge he had retained Honolulu attorney Michael Green, who was unable to attend the hearing on short notice.

Nakamura rescheduled Berdon’s arraignment and plea for 1 p.m. June 25.
