Trails council seeks applicants
The Department of Land and Natural Resources Division of Forestry and Wildlife is inviting applications from interested individuals for vacant seats on the Na Ala Hele Trails and Access Program Advisory Council on Hawaii Island.
Na Ala Hele Advisory Council members are asked to advise the program on trail and access concerns and issues, discuss and make recommendations on legal issues, and promote communication and cooperation between government and community representatives. Advisory council members receive public comments/recommendations and consult with their constituencies when needed.
The council consists of nine members representing each of the following categories: Hawaiian culture, trail/mountain clubs, mountain bikers, hikers, equestrians, hunters, fishers, environmentalists, landowners and trail/access advocates.
Applicants are now being sought to fill open seats in the Hawaiian culture and fishermen categories. At the same time, DOFAW is also creating a qualified list of those interested in any of the listed categories. All applicants should have an appropriate background in the category area as well as an interest in representing community stakeholders related to their respected categories.
Individuals who are interested in serving on the council may submit an application. Forms are available at dlnr.hawaii.gov/recreation/nah. Applications should be mailed to: Na Ala Hele Program Manager, Division of Forestry and Wildlife, 19 E. Kawili St., Hilo, HI 96720, attention Clement Chang. Applications will be reviewed by the DOFAW and members of the council. Final selections will be made by the DLNR chairman. Applications must be received by July 6.
Junior rangers program taking registration
Youths 9 to 12 years old are invited to become junior rangers through the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park’s Keiki o Hawaii Nei summer program. The four-day program runs from June 17 to 20. On June 17 and 20, the program is from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.; on June 18 and 19, from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Participants must bring and be able to carry their own day pack with water, snacks, lunch, and raingear, and hike up to three miles at a leisurely pace. To reserve a space for a child, call the park’s Education Center at 985-6019. A registration form will be emailed, which must be completed and returned.
Reservation deadline is Friday.
