Korean War veterans meet
The Korean War Veterans Association of West Hawaii Chapter 279 will meet at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Veterans of Foreign Wars center at the corner of Kuakini Highway and Makala Boulevard in Kailua-Kona.
Membership is open to any person who has seen honorable service in the Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force and Coast Guard if said service was within Korea including territorial waters and airspace from Sept. 3, 1945, to the present, or said service was outside of Korea from June 25, 1950, to Jan. 31, 1955. Associate members are also welcome.

Veterans meet Saturday morning
Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 12122 meets at 11:30 a.m. Saturday even though the state VFW convention is being held in Honolulu. This meeting will update members about a projected move date and work parties required for the move. Call Dick Skarnes for updates at 818-384-7500.
Household hazardous waste collected
Household hazardous waste will be collected between 7:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the Kealakehe Recycling and Transfer Station in Kona.
The event is for household-generated and self-hauled waste only. Business, government agency, nonprofit agency or farm wastes are not allowed. No electronic waste will be accepted. Some types of acceptable waste are automotive fluids, used batteries, fluorescent lights and pesticides. For a more complete list of acceptable or unacceptable waste, visit hawaiizerowaste.org.
The next scheduled collection events will be on Dec. 6 in Hilo and Dec. 13 in Kailua-Kona..

Fruit growers meet Monday
West Hawaii chapter of Hawaii Tropical Fruit Growers meets from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the University of Hawaii Experiment Station in Kainaliu across from Aloha Theatre. Nonmembers are welcome to attend.
Mark Nickum will discuss phenology, the fruit tree life cycle. All attending are encouraged to bring fruit for sampling.

Meditation society meets Monday
The Kona Interfaith Meditation Society will hold its first meeting at 5:30 p.m. Monday at Hawaiian Queen Coffee Garden, 75-1048 Henry St. All are welcome.
The meeting will feature a 20-minute video by the Dalai Lama, “To Create Happiness in Our Lives.” There will also be time for silence. The group’s purpose is to promote meditation in its many forms to support seekers in their practice and to bring greater peace to the world.

Water for Life Institute director talks to Rotary
Water for Life Institute executive director Derek Chignell will address the Rotary Club of Kona Sunrise during its breakfast meeting at 6:45 a.m. June 18 upstairs at Humpy’s Restaurant. Breakfast is $11, coffee is $5. All are welcome to attend.
The Water for Life Institute is a nongovernmental organization dedicated to helping communities around the world solve their needs for safe water, adequate sanitation, and hygiene education. Chignell holds a master’s degree in communication and a Ph.D. in biophysical chemistry.
