Aloha Grown awards announced
Five Hawaii Island organizations were awarded the 2014 Aloha Grown Malama Honua Award. Each received $500 towards a specific project, program or initiative that embodies Aloha Grown’s philosophy to “support local, sustain the aina and share the aloha.”
Alo Kehau o ka Aina Mauna was recognized for its “Malama Puu” project, Kohala Elementary School for its “Discovery Garden” project, and Laupahoehoe Community Public Charter School for the “Farm to School” program. Also, Naalehu School Garden was awarded for its “Aquaponics Garden Unit” project and Punana Leo o Waimea for its “Malaai expansion” project.

Book club meets Tuesday morning
The Kona Library Book Club meets at 11 a.m. Tuesday on the Kailua-Kona Public Library lanai. This month’s selection is “The Greater Journey: Americans in Paris” by David McCullough, which tells the remarkable story of the generations of American artists, writers, and doctors — many of them future household names including Oliver Wendell Holmes, Mark Twain, Samuel Morse and Harriet Beecher Stowe — who traveled to Paris, the intellectual, scientific and artistic capital of the western world and fell in love with the city and its people. When they came back to the United States, they helped shape American art, medicine, writing, science, and politics in profound ways.
Light refreshments will be served.
Cadang receives valor award
Former Konawaena Elementary and Middle School student Austin K. Cadang was awarded the Loudoun County Chamber of Commerce Valor Award April 4 in Sterling, Va.
He was awarded after responding to a call of a possible heart attack and seizure. Several fire crew took turns administering CPR and an AED shock. The patient began to breathe on his own and his pulse returned.
Cadang will graduate this year from Potomac Falls High School in Sterling, Va. and plans to attend West Virginia University to pursue a degree in fire science. He is the son of Alika and Joelynn Cadang and the grandson of Joseph and Leilani Nullar and Alex and Linda Cadang.
