More than 300 students and 24 schools islandwide participated in Recycle Hawaiis’s ninth annual Art of Recycling School Competition held in April. The event displayed recycled art created by students from preschool, elementary, middle and high school levels attending public, private and home schools on Hawaii Island.
West Hawaii students submitted 37 entries, which were displayed April 11 to 15 at Kona International Market. Participating schools included Kahakai Elementary and Ocean View Home schools and Hawaii Technology Academy. Kahakai Elementary received an Outstanding School Award for its own schoolwide Recyclable Art Contest, in which more than 400 recycle art works were displayed in the school’s library and juried for selected entries that advance to the Art of Recycling event.
North Hawaii students submitted 47 entries, which were displayed April 24 to 26 and April 30 to May 2 at Firehouse Gallery in Waimea. Participating schools included Heartlight Montessori Homeschool, Hawaii Technology Academy, Waimea Country, Waimea Elementary, Waimea Middle and Kohala High schools.
East Hawaii students submitted 52 entries, which were displayed April 4 to 8 at Prince Kuhio Plaza in Hilo. Participating schools were Ernest B. de Silva Elementary, Ka Umeke Kaeo Public Charter, Chiefess Kapiolani Elementary, Mountain View Elementary, Naalehu Elementary – KSLIS, Olson Home, Pahala Elementary – KSLIS, Pahala Summer Fun, Waiakeawaena Elementary, Hawaii Technology Academy, St. Joseph and Keaau High schools.
