Auntie’s Angels seeks donations
Auntie’s Angels will hold its monthly Soup Kitchen n Pantry for low-income seniors living at Hualalai Elderly Housing on Saturday. Along with the request for donations of fresh fruits and vegetables, the Angel’s now have additional storage space for cases of soup plus other canned goods. This space also allows the group to ask area groups or couponers who wish to share basic necessities with their kupuna. Items can be dropped off during the week by calling Jan at 329-7897.
Kuwahara to represent state at pageant
Shyanne Kuwahara was selected as 2014 Mrs. Hawaii International on April 12l. Kuwahara will be traveling to Jacksonville, Fla., July 25 and 26 to represent the state and compete in the Mrs. International Pageant. She is a 2000 graduate of Konawaena High School, danced for kumu Etua Lopes and represented Hawaii Island as princess for the Aloha Week Royal Court in 2000. She is the daughter of Greg and Paula Telles of Kailua-Kona. Kuwahara is married to Garrett Kuwahara of Honolulu and has three children ages 8, 6 and 4.
Kuwahara is a volunteer spokesperson for American Heart Association and her platform “Healthy Hearts” focuses on educating the community in the simple steps to maintain a healthy heart. The pageant showcases the accomplishments of today’s married women and commitment to family and marriage to work together with their husbands and family to become positive role models.
Neighborhood Place seeking donations
The Neighborhood Place of Kona will hold its third annual Tutu’s Closet, a free mini thrift shop, for families from 9 a.m. to noon July 12. Donations of gently used clothing, apparel and small household items are appreciated, and will be accepted from today through July 11 between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Children’s clothes are especially needed.
The Neighborhood Place of Kona is located at 75-166 Kalani St., Suite 104, Kailua-Kona. It is a community-based 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization serving West Hawaii communities since 1998. Its mission is to ensure the well-being of children and families by promoting an environment of peace and safety.

The mayor’s Committee on People with Disabilities meets at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the ADRCtraining room, 1055 Kinoole St., Hilo.

Retirement preparation is topic for workshop
Tutu’s House in Waimea is hosting a program on “10 Steps to Get Ready for Retirement” from 5;30 to 7 p.m. Thursday. AARP volunteer Ed Hickey teaches this workshop designed to explore the idea of retirement as a life transition, visualize goals, and identify the steps needed to build retirement security and the life a person wants. This discussion is part of a series of informational sessions being offered at Tutu’s House to help people plan their next step.
Tutu’s House welcomes all and shares a variety of educational resources in a safe place to explore health and wellness. There are no fees, but tax-deductible donations are welcome. To register to attend, call Tutu’s House at 885-6777.
Dementia seminars slated Saturday
The Alzheimer’s Association will present lectures and a movie Saturday at Tutu’s House in Waimea; What Is Dementia, and Challenging Behaviors in Dementia.
The first topic will be “What Is Dementia,” a workshop which reviews dementia, the symptoms, warning signs, misconceptions and potential treatments. The 9 a.m. presentation includes short videos of individuals with the disease, family members of people with dementia and various professionals.
The movie “A Song for Martin” will be shown at 11 a.m. The main two characters, Sven Wollter and Viveka Seldahl — married in real life — play married couple Martin and Barbara in this 2011 Swedish movie with English subtitles. Martin is a conductor and composer; Barbara, a violinist. They meet and marry in middle-age, but soon after, they find out that Martin has Alzheimer’s disease.
At 1 p.m., the topic will be “Challenging Behaviors in Dementia.” This workshop covers information on possible causes and types of behaviors that may arise during the course of dementia as well as potential interventions.

Car and motorcycle show planned
The Kona Summer Car Show will be held from 2 to 7 p.m. Saturday at Old Kona Airport Park.
The event is a rally for the Kona Motorsport Park and will have space for more than 150 cars, trucks and motorcycles.
There are 10 classes for all types of show vehicles from Volkswagens to sports cars, hot rods, classics, 4x4s and more. Entry forms with the list of classes and information are available at hawaiiracingassoc.org. Vendors with automotive or motorcycle products are also invited to participate with a display tent and show vehicle. Information for sponsors and vendors is also on the website.
The deadline for entries and vendors is today. Entry fee for participants is four nonperishable items for the Hawaii Island Food Basket. They will be collected during the 1 to 2 p.m. check in at the park.
Spectators wishing to vote for people’s choice awards may get a ballot at the Food Basket tent with a two-item donation.
