Energy assistance available for low income residents
Hawaii County Economic Opportunity Council is conducting the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program during June. HCEOC offices are located in Kona, Naalehu, Ocean View, Pahala, Honokaa, Pahoa, Keaau and Hilo.
Documents needed for the application include a current Hawaii Electric Light Co. or gas bill; verification of income such as pay stubs, documentation of SNAP, food stamps, SSI, unemployment, Social Security; proof of physical address; picture ID of all adults in household, Social Security cards for adults and children older than 1, birth certificates for infants and children up to 1 year are required; verification of U.S. citizenship or legal residency must be presented.

Halau holds registration
Halau Kalaakeakaui-kawekiu will hold open registration for new students from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday and June 28 at 74-5598 Luhia St., Suite 101.
The halau is a nonprofit organization that works to heighten Hawaiian cultural awareness and participation through educational programs and annual performances. For more information, call 989-4616.
Club to hike summit of Puu Ahumoa
The Kona Hiking Club will hike up Puu Laau Road to the summit of Ahumoa on Saturday. The hike is an easy to moderate 4-mile round trip hike on a 4-wheel drive road with some rough and deep ruts. The hike will take about two hours. The elevation is approximately 7,000 feet.
The hikers will meet at 9 a.m. near the Kilohana Hunter Check-in Station at mile marker 43.5 just off Saddle Road. When coming from Kailua-Kona on the Daniel K. Inouye Highway, turn left and the check-in station is on the right side of Saddle Road. Directly across Saddle Road (on the left side), is a large graded area where the group will meet and leave most of the vehicles. Those attending should park on any unvegetated area adjacent to the road.
Hikers should wear colorful attire and hiking boots. Bring 2 liters of water, sun protection and lunch or snacks.
Participants desiring to carpool from Kailua-Kona may meet at 7:45 a.m. at Lanihau Center and depart no later than 8 a.m.
