Special Olympics coaches needed
Special Olympics West Hawaii is looking for soccer coaches. Practices and games are underway at Old Kona Airport Park fields from 3 to 5 p.m. Tuesdays and Fridays. The season runs through Aug. 10.
Basketball coaches are also wanted for the Winter Games. The season runs from September and through November.

Workshop on college recruiting
A “College Night” session offers high school and junior high students information on the recruiting process from 6:30 to 8 p.m. June 23 at the Kahakai Elementary School library.
Athletes of all sports and their parents are welcomed to the free session, presented by AYSO and moderated by George Kuntz, the men’s soccer coach at California State Fullerton.

Soccer tryouts
Kona Crush Soccer Academy will be holding open tryouts July 19 at Pualani Field. Tryouts will consist of two hourlong sessions with the head coach of the age group. Group times are: Under-8 coed, U10 coed, U11 boys, U12 girls — 9 to 10 a.m. and 1 to 2 p.m.; U13 boys, U14 boys, U14 girls —10:15 to 11:15 a.m. and 2:15 to 3:15 p.m.; and U16 boys, U18 girls 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 3:30 to 4:30 p.m.
No registration is necessary, but a ball is required. Additional information can be obtained by emailing KonaCrushAcademy@gmail.com.

Winona Chen of Bike Works, who earned a spot in the Ironman World Championships at the recent Ironman 70.3 Hawaii, is encouraging new and seasoned triathletes to join Bike Works Team Kona for the Olympic distance Hilo Triathlon on July 13 at James Kealoha Beach Park. She will be hosting a free prerace training event on July 6.

Vulcans offer baseball camps
The 2014 Vulcans Baseball Academy will begin June 23 and end July 23 at the University of Hawaii at Hilo baseball field.
The 10-day academy is divided into four one-hour, age-group sessions. Time slots are 9:30–10:30 a.m. for ages 16-18, 10:45–11:45 a.m. for 11-12, 12:15–1:15 p.m. for 9-10, and 1:30–2:45 p.m. for 13-15. Each age-group is limited to 12 participants.
Dates of the Academy are: June 23, June 25, July 1, July 3, July 7, July 9, July 14, July 16, July 21, July 23.

Yagi hoops camp in Hilo
The Department of Parks and Recreation will hold the Jimmy Yagi Summer Hoops Camp July 21 to 24 in Hilo.
The camp, open to boys and girls ages 9 to 17, will be held at the Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium and the Panaewa Covered Play Courts.
Teenage campers will receive personalized instruction from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. daily. Full-court games are from 2 to 4 p.m.
Ages 9 to 12 will receive similar instruction from 9 a.m. to noon. Four-on-four games are at 1 and 3 p.m.
Early registration is $60 per child. The cost will rise to $70 after July 14. Participants will receive camp shirts and group photo.
Registration forms are available during business hours at the Department’s Recreation Division Office located within Aunty Sally Kaleohano’s Luau Hale at 799 Piilani St., Hilo, and online at hawaiicounty.gov/pr-recrea. Soccer camp at UH-Hilo
The University of Hawaii at Hilo will host a soccer camp July 21 to 24. Sessions for ages 7 to 10 are from 9 a.m. to noon, for 11 to 14 from 1 to 4 p.m.
The camp fee is $60. Registration deadline is July 18.

Free bowling for keiki
KBXtreme in Kailua-Kona is partnering with Kids Bowl Free, a national summer bowling program for children younger than 15, to allow two free games on weekdays.
This year, KBXtreme is nominating Big Island elementary and intermediate schools for the Bowling for Schools $50,000 grant program. The program runs to Aug. 31.

AYSO Region 527 and Team Soccer Direct are offering camps June 24 to 26 at Old Kona Airport Park. The day camp, for U-6 to U-14, is 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The cost is $130.
The high school camp, for U-14 to U-18, is 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The cost is $85.

Brantley Center golf benefit
The Brantley Center will host its 36th annual golf tournament fundraiser Sunday at the Waikoloa Village Golf Course.
The format is two-person best ball.

Following the tournament, there will be a luncheon, auction and prizes at Banjy’s Paradise Bar and Grill in Waikoloa.
Proceeds benefit adults with disabilities who participate in rehab programs offered at the center. The center welcomes donations from individuals and businesses. All donations are tax deductible.
Big Island soccer camp at HPA
The Big Island ID Soccer Camp will be held June 23 to 26 at Hawaii Preparatory Academy.
The camp is divided into two sessions: ages 7 to 14, 8 a.m. to noon; ages 15 to 18, 3 to 6 p.m.
Cost is $165 per camper.

20th annual King’s Swim
Kona Aquatics will host the 20th annual King’s Swim on July 5 at Kailua Bay.
The 1.2-mile course begins at Kailua Bay and ends at Kamakahonu Bay. No wetsuits or fins are permitted.
Applications are available at Bikeworks in Kona. A nonrefundable entry fee of $15 must accompany the application. The registration deadline is June 30. Late registration will be held at Kailua Pier from 6:30 to 7:30 a.m. race day for $20.
Division awards will be presented to the top three finishers and prizes will be drawn throughout the postrace ceremonies.
Volunteers with kayaks, surfboards or standup paddleboards who volunteer for safety patrol are welcome; report to the pier before 7:30 a.m.

Hilo’s first official triathlon will start at 7 a.m. July 13 at James Kealoha Beach Park.
The Olympic-distance race — 1.5-km swim, 40-km bike ride and 10-km run — is limited to 500 participants.
